The Ottawa Pet Rat Rescue 2022 calendar is here.
As usual, we have compiled some lovely photos for our annual Rescue calendar along with some stories of the rats who currently live at the Rescue or have been adopted through the Rescue.
Each calendar is $20 - all of the funds we raise go right back towards vet costs, food, fabric, and bedding to help more rescue rats.

Calendars can be picked up in person near Lee Valley Tools (Pinecrest & Greenbank - Ottawa), near Lansdowne (Ottawa), or in Gloucester (Ottawa).

Meet Lulu and Harvey. Two lone rats, who found love and company with each other. Lulu had recently lost her sister, while Harvey was a lone male transferred to the Rescue from the Brampton SPCA (along with 13 others) who had been part of a seizure. After being neutered and many attempts to introduce Harvey to other rats, we decided what Harvey really needed, were some girlfriends.
After just 2 weeks, Harvey and Lulu are now like two peas in a pod: inseparable.
Rats are extremely social beings. And just like us, they really need a friend. We just have to help them find the right one :)

We are excited to reveal this little project one of our foster moms has been working on for the last few months to help us raise funds for the Ottawa Pet Rat Rescue.
Combining her skills as a talented illustrator and her love for rats, Emily has kindly designed and created a set of 7 stickers for us.
Each sticker is based off of an actual rat whom we cared for through the years and we were lucky enough to get an advanced look at these adorable designs which will put a smile on your face.

I absolutely had to paint little Merlin’s portrait as soon as I saw his sweet face and all those WHISKERS! Merlin is a retired lab rat and a member of @popcornsmischief (a mischief is the name for a group of rats ), whom you should totally follow for cute rat photos and videos!

I think this is my first rat portrait, which is crazy because I absolutely love rats. I think they make just about the perfect pet: they’re as smart and as sweet as dogs, as clean as cats, they can learn to use a litter box, but they’re small and quiet and make great apartment pets. My rattie boys (several years ago) knew they weren’t allowed in the kitchen and would go back in their cage when we told them to. They were always so excited when we got home and loved to spend time with us. The only downside about rats is their short lifespan - on average between 2-3 years. Just long enough to get to know them…

WILL YOU BE MY MOM?
I remember when I first got #Miwa as a little baby she was so frightened of her new environment and #rat family. But then she met #Ella and immediately latched on and fell in love with her. I think she saw her as a mother figure. It was the sweetest thing!
Miwa would follow Ella everywhere, eat next to her and sleep by her side at night. And not once did Ella look annoyed or push her away. She was the best mom to her. ✨ I mean… look at Miwa’s face!!!! She’s so happy! ☺️

PWETTY PWEAAAASE.
This is the face I always get when I say NO to Toupee. How do I not give into that!?!
This morning I gave #Toupee and #Roux their breakfast of kale, cucumbers and blueberries. Meanwhile, my breakfast consisted of coffee and apple pie.
All was fine and good until Toupee smelled my yummy breakfast. She quickly ran over, put her hand on my thigh and looked up at me with her signature “pwetty pwease” look. She then licked my hand as if to say…., “Please use this hand to pick up apple pie and put in my mouth thank you.” Man! #Rats really test your strength! So far…I’ve failed every single time. #ToupeeThursday
✨PS - To be clear, if I had Toupee’s face and someone was eating apple pie…I would use my charms to get in on that too. She’s a smart girl. Love you Toops!

ONE….TWO…. TOUPEE’S COMING FOR YOU! ❣️ I love the film #NightmareOnElmStreet so I couldn’t resist dressing #Toupee up as #FreddyKrueger for #Halloween !!! I told her to make a really SCARY face for the photo, but as you can see, she was not successful. Look at her sweet, innocent face! MY DELICATE EATERS.
#Toupee & #Potato are my gentle, slooooow eaters! As we know, #ratties can gobble up food like nobody’s business but these two are just so darn dainty with their food! Such manners!
When I first got Toupee, her and Potato did NOT get along. It took me a while to understand what was going on between them, as Toupee was getting along with everyone else and Potato was getting along with Roux. It was just these two that had problems. After working with the both of them, I realized they had something in common: both were VERY sensitive and insecure.
Unfortunately, there was a lot of fighting and it was worrisome, so I ended up having to separate them and live apart. I was bummed there was a good chance they would never be able to be in the same dwelling. BUT I never gave up on them! I reached out to a few people who were rat pros in our community and they taught me very special techniques to try on the girls and I’m happy to say with persistence, a lot of patience and working on their fear, they are now BEST FRIENDS! In fact, of all the #rats , these two stick together the most! Isn’t it funny when that happens? So now, we are one big happy family! And my two slow eaters can now eat delicately… together! Nom. Pause. Nom. Pause. Nom.
PS! Do you see how at one point Toupee eats her cracker into a little heart?!?! I can’t.

YAWWWWWNNNNNN! Ever notice that your #rat yawns a lot? Especially when you come up to pet them? They say, aside from just waking up, a lot of the time, when a rat yawns towards you, it’s to say hello!!! How sweet is that?!? I got the best hello from #Toupee today! ASMR LOVE!
This #rat video is for all the #ASMR lovers out there! I love listening to my #ratties munch on crunchy foods! It brings me so much joy! Here is baby #Roux eating her favorite vegetable, carrots. Volume up! How yummy is she? I want to nibble on her little hands and bop that perfect nose! And of course, my baby #Toupee always has to get in there and block the view. WHEATGRASS BABY! Baby #Toupee and #Roux got to try #wheatgrass for the first time and they absolutely loved it! In fact, Toupee went CRAZY over it. She suddenly started kicking, digging and popcorning all over the place (watch video)! She could hardly contain her excitement! And doesn’t Roux look like she’s giving me the side eye? I love watching them when their #rattie wild instincts kick in! So much fun! For those who haven’t tried, I highly recommend wheatgrass for your #ratties ! Not only is it good for them, the wheatgrass garden also stimulates their foraging and hunting skills! And it’s so easy to grow. Toupee and Roux are in wheatgrass heaven! YAWN, BOGGLES & LOVE.
My #babyrat #Toupee absolutely idolizes #Mizu - She follows her everywhere, copies her every move and sleeps with her every single night. Definitely a Stage Five Clinger! Since a very young age, Toupee would go underneath Mizu to try to get milk from her, so it looks like she sees Mizu as her mother? It’s so adorable and sweet!
At first, when #Toupée would follow her everywhere, Mizu would look up at me like, “Um, I didn’t sign up for this. I need my space!” But now, I’m so proud of Mizu. She is very patient with Toupee, let’s her crawl all over her and gives her kisses and boggles every day. By the way, for those who don’t know what boggling is, it’s when #ratties grind their teeth which makes their eyes move quickly in and out of their sockets … an action that typically means they’re very happy and content! It can also mean they’re not feeling well, but in this case, it’s clear that it’s nothing but pure #love and affection! God I wish I had a shrinking machine so I could crawl in there between them and join in on the love! Love you Meez and Toops! You melt my heart!
