Learn the History of the Term “Winter Soldier” and Why Ed Brubaker Used the Name in Captain America

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier coming out, soon I was curious about where the name “Winter Soldier” came from. It turns out it’s a lot more than just a cool-sounding name comic book writer Ed Brubaker came up with. It has its roots in the Vietnam War and even goes back to Thomas Paine.

I first became curious about the origins of the term “Winter Soldier” after hearing podcast host Jesse Thorn mention it a few times on his show Jordan, Jesse, Go! He was put off by Marvel’s use of the phrase due to its association with the Vietnam War’s Winter Soldier Hearings.

Rather than paraphrasing him, I reached out to Thorn about his feelings on the situation. Here is his reply: […]

Another in my series of taking my Bucky cosplays too far

Incognito - Bad Influences by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, 2010-2011

Incognito by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, 2008-2009

In retrospect, Hawkeye and the Winter Soldier should have been a thing. It should have been it’s own show.

I say this as someone who loves Anthony Mackie and I get the idea that he and Sebastian Stan had chemistry and we’re making shows, so they should have a show. (Never mind that the “chemistry” is Anthony Mackie’s charisma and media training, much as I love Sebastian Stan as an actor, this is important to acknowledge.)

Sam should have had a chance to be the sole focus. Even now that they’ve announced a Cap 4 movie, I have this feeling that he’s been short-changed as a character. Or going to be further short-changed. Short-changed again.

Watching Hawkeye I have the same feeling that I had with TFATWS and Loki. That is, 6 episodes is much shorter than you think. The potential to play this differently is maybe just a sticky feeling that we can’t escape. Certainly introduction Kate Bishop is a noble pursuit.

Maybe there’s just always other ways to do things. Thank goodness for Ao3. Or more likely there are still persistent forces in corporate media that deprive us of more meaningful stories in the pursuit of money.

Bucky grinning like a little shit; as if Natasha kissing him is the same as him getting away with something.  Best smile ever.  Perfect moment.  Bucky still being that little shit he was in WWII, even if he has technically grown up.

Thank you Ed Brubaker.

Civil War: Wolverine

i’ve been saying for weeks how fucking nonsensical it is for mcu!bucky to be adapted into the White Wolf (a completely seperate character he has little, if anything at all, to do with) when bucky in the comics is the Winter Soldier and has been since 2004. As it turns out, this breathtakingly out of character adaptation of Bucky literally trying to fix/forget his Winter Soldier identity is just Disney actively trying to avoid paying Ed Brubaker, co-creator of the Winter Soldier comic-run, ongoing royalties.  Brudbaker has been disputing TFATWS’ interpretation of Bucky for weeks. Just a reminder that Disney has no respect for the comic creatives who’s award-winning works they’re profiting off, and the only thing mcu!bucky as a character has going for him is being played by Sebastian Stan.

A few pics of my Daredevil cosplay at San Diego Comic Con this year. Ran into Ed Brubaker, who wrote my favorite run in Daredevil history. And was hoping to see Riri Williams cosplay, and I got my wish.

SENTIMENTAL POST WARNING: Highlight of the whole weekend was when I was in my Daredevil costume, a woman who teaches special ed asked me if I could say hi in a video to her student Braden, who is partially blind. She told me each kid in her class has a super hero nickname and his is Daredevil. I told him to stay awesome and never let anyone tell him that he can’t do anything.

Seeing the looks on kid’s faces and hearing them excitedly yell at their parents when they see a hero they love is the best part of comic con.
