Chang Lee is'nt the Asian Child. It was mispelt. Chang Lee is actually the AceIan Child.
“What? AceIan? I thought Ian stayed with Barbara forever.” you might say. Yes, he did, They had three children together - John (born 1966), Gillian (born 1969), and Steven (born 1972) Chesterton.
But Ian and Barbara also once went to a reproductive science convention in the late 2020’s. Where Ian’s sperm and Barbara’s eggs were taken away so they could be donors.
Ace became a Time Lady and regenerated, one of her incarnations taking a form of South-East Asian phenotype. (usual SE Asian skin + William Russel skin = average out to Yee Jee Tso skin.)
This incarnation of Ace, used Ian’s sperm to get pregnant, and nine months later, gave birth to a son that looked like a paler skinned version of her. She named him Leefarivopilarnac Firebrand McShane Lungbarrowmas. “Lee McShane” for short.
As people don’t age\grow up on the TARDIS, Ace, her current Companion, and baby Lee, settled down together on a planet far away from both Earth and the current Companion’s native planet, centuries after from both of their native times. But it was a cozy planet! Lee lived there for the first 18 years of his life. When he turned 18, he decided to settle down in 1992 San Francisco, and changed his name to Chang Lee via psychic paper.

the extreme contrast between thirteen going to maximum-security prison for thirty years and coming out relatively unscathed, and eight going to prison for three years in Seeing I (one of the most emotionally devastating EDAs ive ever read), is…
well, it’s really something.
i don’t know what to make of it. the real explanation is obvious: the writers probably didn’t read Seeing I. the EDAs aren’t exactly well-known. even if they did read the book, they aren’t obligated to depict the Doctor in the same way - and it’s probably good that they didn’t, since that’d be verydisturbing.
but, still. it’s interesting to think about how different the character is now. i know that the circumstances in “Revolution of the Daleks” and Seeing I aren’t the same, but they’re comparable, and the way that the character responds is not.
interpretation aside, the way that the characters are actually written is very different. post-Heaven Sent, there’s a casual apathy now that didn’t used to be there. pent-up emotion, probably, but also just exhaustion. all thirteen cared about was getting home to her friends. she didn’t even plan on telling them. thirty years is nothing.

My tribute to the beautiful Eighth Doctor–whom I love so very, very much. Despite the traumatic circumstances of his regeneration (he woke up freezing in a morgue, for goodness’ sake!), he is bright, enthusiastic, honest, and one of the sweetest and most passionate Doctors ever. Though, at times, the pendulum too easily swings to a darker, colder nature full of snark and weary of battle. Over time he is broken by pain and loss, driven to the edge of insanity and heartbreak, until at last the Time War destroys him. Every Doctor since has had to cope with the memory of what Eight endured…and usually ends up following a similar pattern. I’ve tried to capture that transition, from his beautiful, golden beginning, to his broken, hardened, world-weary end.
