Handmaid’s Tale, O Conto da Aia, é uma ficção e a história se passa em uma região dos EUA que foi tomada por um governo totalitário. No início vemos a protagonista sobrevivendo nesse novo sistema, ao mesmo tempo que acompanhamos flashbacks de quando ela e sua família tentaram fugir do país, mas não conseguiram.
O que acho mais interessante e triste nesses flashbacks, é que ela e o marido não fazem nada no início. Foram várias coisinhas que foram acontecendo aos poucos, quando eles percebem que a coisa está feia, já é tarde demais pra fugir… #elenão #elenunca #nothim

I have made a comic for Inktober about some recent things and thoughts in my life about Brazil, Canada, the #EleNao movement, and my uncle.
It’s in Portuguese but it’s also translated in English below:
I went to visit Canada because my uncle who lives there needed an operation, and my mom needed me to accompany her.
As you travel to another country, you start trying to guess the cultural differences, as to not be impolite.
Are they distant?
Are hugs OK?
And then your optics turn to yourself. What is the Brazillian like?
From the stereotypes of each country, we always hear that the Brazillian is the friendliest. Loves tourists.
Quickly turns into your friend and tries to help as much as possible even without knowing the language.
Brazil is the country that Black American activists from the 60s saw as the future. A country of miscegenation, of a true mix of cultures and ethinicities.
All of these were things I believed in before my trip.
Quickly these beliefs were destroyed during my stay.
My first time using their metro, I met a beautiful woman with an equally beautiful spirit.
I still remember her name, Barbara. She helped me getting on the metro, gave me company and safety.
I have never felt so at ease at a metro in my life.
I thought only brazillians liked hugging like this.
Every time I said I was a tourist there, people’s eyes sparkled. Every stranger did as much as they could to help me out.
I pretended being a foreigner once back home, and people just wanted to scam me in some way.
I visited public free museums with beautiful expositions.
I saw original Monet paintings, a public library with several floors, and a natural museum. All of this for free, places that exist and keep themselves up for no other end other than their own appreciation.
Couldn’t help but think about us.

Half of Brazil’s population is Black, and yet I saw more Black people integrated in all social classes and public life there than back home.
That girl alone in the restaurant we went to, I’m sure she would’ve been treated like crap over here.
We pride in being a country formed by so many different cultures, but we call the Chinese “dirty”, Cuban doctors “housekeepers”, and we say to refugees “out of my country”
#EleNao He doesn’t surprise me anymore. I understand how someone like him is gaining so much traction.
I understand why we’re one of the most violent countries in the world.
That most murders gay people, trans people. Why Brazil is so racist, homophobic, has so much inequity. So much social and political corruption.

We don’t do the right thing for the other.
We don’t fight for the other.
We don’t believe in the other.
We would rather have the other go f░░░ themselves.
“Pepper in someone else’s eyes is a refreshment” is a Brazillian expression.
Brazillians see trust in the other as an opportunity for self-benefit.
Politicians are elected because of our trust in them, only so they can use that trust to inflate their own wages.
But we don’t fix this by closing ourselves off and hating the other.
We don’t fix this with bullets.
My uncle told me why he left Brazil.
He had just left the Army.
Walking with a friend in the middle of the rain.
A car drove in front of them.
“Hey hot stuff!”
“What’s your problem?!”
The people in the car were out of service plainclothes policemen
My uncle was armed, and yet he couldn’t do a thing.
His gun seemed to give the policemen more ideas instead of just leaving it at beating him up.
They were handcuffing him and putting him inside the car when an elderly woman shouted,
“What else are you going to do with him?!”
The policemen decided to go away, leaving my uncle on the ground.
The Brazillian isn’t a bad person.
It’s a person like that woman who rescued and took care of my uncle.
Brazillians are people with big strong hearts.
But like any muscle, we need to exercise it regularly.
It’s not easy, but we have to do it, especially now in October.
Vote based on the love and trust in others, and not because of hate.
