New colours, but old lines - two posies from a zine about the language of flowers that I’m reworking at the moment. I don’t use outlines in my work very often, but it’s fun! Also, sadly, difficult.

A beautiful book on floriography (with an index and poems at the end!):

My 2022 calendars and planners are out now! Published by @andrewsmcmeelbooks and featuring artwork from my book Floriography: An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers. Here’s a few photos featuring my favorite things about them, from the bouquets in the calendar to the beautiful Smythe sewn binding on the planner (a unique feature that lets the pages lay flat AND eliminates the need for a plastic spiral). Speaking of plastic, there’s none in the calendar, planner, or packaging, and they are printed on uncoated paper sourced from FSC sustainable forests with soy-based inks. You can find them anywhere that sells books, from Bookshop, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, BAM, Book Depository, and more, and in my own shop.

My 2022 calendar and planner are available to preorder! They are Floriography themed, and you can find them through your favorite indie book store, as well as through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Booksamillion, Bookshop, BookDepository (if you’re outside the US this is a great resource) and any of your other favorite places to get books.

I’ll be doing a free virtual lecture about Floriography on August 30th, hosted by the Taylorsville Library in Utah. Link to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-adult-lecture-floriography-the-language-of-flowers-tickets-143335246581

Here’s the dahlia page of my book, featuring a dahlia I grew in my own garden this year.

I’m so excited to share my 2022 calendar… Floriography: Secret Meaning of Flowers! And, even more exciting, there will be a Floriography 2022 planner! Both are available for preorder now from your favorite booksellers. It has been a dream come true to work with @andrewsmcmeelbooks on these. They are made from 100% recyclable materials with no plastic in the product or packaging, with soy-based inks and paper sourced from FSC sustainable forests. Both feature full-color artwork from my book, Floriography: An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers. They’ll be released September 14th, but preorders are SO helpful and important to authors and artists like myself. It makes sure the publisher is able to make enough for everyone who wants one, and it boosts the rank of the calendar and planner so more people can find it (and my work!) So if you typically buy a calendar from me and want to check this out early, a preorder is a fantastic way to support my work and make sure you’ll get one when they come out. I’m SO excited about these, and I really hope you are, too!

The Mysterious Symbols of the Victorian Era with Guest Speaker, Jessica Roux, Author / Illustrator of Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers

Join us online Saturday, March 20 @ 11am - 12:30pm CST

Join Light Grey Art Lab instructors Lindsay Nohl & Jenny Wells and guest speaker Jessica Roux, Author / Illustrator of Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers, for an insightful workshop that wanders through the Victorian Era’s mysterious, romantic, ornamental, and symbolic icons.

The Mysterious Symbols of the Victorian Era
The Victorian Era inspires thoughts of dark fabrics, top hats, corsets , and bustles, strict codes of courtship and romance, of arsenic-laced wallpapers with ornate patterns, of days when mediumship and alternative forms of spirituality spurred some of the most intriguing esoteric communities and how death was memorialized in photos, memento-mori, and monuments to the lost. And amongst all of these aspects of living, a language of symbols pervaded every aspect of life – from love to loss, hope to despair. In this course, we will cover some of our favorite Victorian symbols and their connection to the time, and speak with author/illustrator Jessica Roux about the stories behind her new book, Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers.
