One of my early inspirations for becoming a taxidermist was the Victorian era obsession with the art. This piece was created by me a few years ago as an homage to that era.

Victorian taxidermy is said to have been stemmed from a newfound interest in the natural world from the emerging middle class. This new middle class now had time & expendable income to collect and even create ‘parlor art’ ; taxidermy, wax flowers, shell collections, fossil collections and more.

They began collections known as ‘Cabinets of Curiosity’ inspired by their newfound ability to travel and visit museums. In fact, before the Victorian era, museums were closed spaces only accessible to members of the aristocracy, academia and other privileged classes.

Today, while museums and education are considered open to all, we must remember there is still privilege in getting access. We all have to do our part to support programs for the underprivileged and also minorities in STEM. Science and education is for everyone!

Sissi,Empress Elisabeth of Austria.Full name is Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie (December 24, 1837-September 10, 1898), she was the wife of Franz Joseph I and also the Queen of the Austrian Empire ,Hungary ,Bohemia and Croatia.

At that time all of Europe was infatuated with her beauty, thus she was called “the most beautiful queen in the world”.

According to the inspiration of Sissi, we designed and produced this dress and her favorite Irish Wolfhound “Shadow”s pendant.

Some spooky art to enter this new year, because I’m feeling particularly dark, in a good way. I’ve been working on this for the last couple days, and now I’m going to continue working on my haunted house. Love you guys! .

The Mysterious Symbols of the Victorian Era with Guest Speaker, Jessica Roux, Author / Illustrator of Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers

Join us online Saturday, March 20 @ 11am - 12:30pm CST

Join Light Grey Art Lab instructors Lindsay Nohl & Jenny Wells and guest speaker Jessica Roux, Author / Illustrator of Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers, for an insightful workshop that wanders through the Victorian Era’s mysterious, romantic, ornamental, and symbolic icons.

The Mysterious Symbols of the Victorian Era
The Victorian Era inspires thoughts of dark fabrics, top hats, corsets , and bustles, strict codes of courtship and romance, of arsenic-laced wallpapers with ornate patterns, of days when mediumship and alternative forms of spirituality spurred some of the most intriguing esoteric communities and how death was memorialized in photos, memento-mori, and monuments to the lost. And amongst all of these aspects of living, a language of symbols pervaded every aspect of life – from love to loss, hope to despair. In this course, we will cover some of our favorite Victorian symbols and their connection to the time, and speak with author/illustrator Jessica Roux about the stories behind her new book, Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers.

Want to attend with a friend? Now there is a friend pack discount on the shop :)

North America 160 years ago today: Attack on Fort Sumter (12 April 1861) https://buff.ly/2P4fceF Despite the Confederacy’s declaration of independence, the United States Army still garrisoned a number of forts in the south. The most vulnerable was Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, South Carolina, which desperately needed to be resupplied. However when newly elected US President Lincoln ordered the navy to ship in supplies, the Confederate government considered it an act of war and attacked the fort from land. The American Civil War had begun. #1861 #19thcentury #americancivilwar #americanhistory #april #april12 #confederacy #fortsumter #historicalmaps #histories #historyfacts #historygram #historymajor #historymatters #historyschool #mapping #maps #northamerica #southcarolina #militaryhistory #ushistory #uscivilwar #confederatestates #victorian #victorianera #abrahamlincoln #worldatlas #todayinhistory #historytoday #thisdayinhistory (at Fort Sumter Tours)
