You know how we all have fan theories and headcanons? Well I keep seeing one on TikTok that, I gotta be honest, I hate. And that’s the theory that Foxface knew the berries were poisonous and committed suicide because she knew she couldn’t win.

Now most of my dislike for this theory is simply the way people talk about it. They don’t say stuff like “I think she knew” or “I’m pretty sure she knew” or anything like that. It’s usually phrased like “she clearly knew” or “it’s obvious she knew” and that’s what I hate. Because whether intentional or not, it comes off so arrogant and for people like me that disagree, it feels like we’re being called fools if we don’t also “obviously know” the same thing.

In the movies, I can understand why this theory came about. We saw Foxface flashing through the edible plants station. However, this did not happen in the books. And now I’m gonna ramble a bit for why I personally do not think this is true.

First, Foxface grew up in Distract 5 which was power and electricity focused. So it’s not impossible for her to know about wild plants but it’s less likely at least. The nightlock berries are mostly found around Distract 12 and 13, far away from District 5, so the chances of Foxface knowing about them beforehand is very slim (not impossible, I’m not saying this theory is wrong, just that it is not as likely as people try and make it out).

Second, and this is all just my opinion, but Foxface quite randomly deciding to commit suicide right near the end of the games bothers the hell out of me. (I’m going to repeat, I’m not saying it’s impossible, maybe she did feel the pressure, but I think it’s rather weird and unlikely.) Maybe if we had been giving an indication about her losing some of her edge, maybe getting sloppy in her panic and being noticed beforehand or something. I know it’s Katniss point of view but if this was something the author intended there would have been plenty of ways to hint at it before it actually happened.

Third, Foxface was smart. And the thing that bothers me is everyone always lumps being smart under one roof and if you’re called smart then you must be knowledgable in most things. And that’s not how being smart works. You can be smart in certain ways even if you’re not necessarily book smart. And this is always what I thought Foxface was. She wasn’t book smart or even necessarily wilderness or nature smart. She was survival smart.
Foxface was smart in the sense that she could memorize where the landmines were buried, smart enough to take food without leaving trace that she had been there, she thought faster than others which is how she got her pack during the feast and she stayed out of the way completely while everyone else killed each other off.
By trying to make her this girl clever in these specific ways, it opens some issues. (Like, if she knew which berries were poisonous and not, why bother stealing people’s food at all? Why not just pick the berries herself? If Katniss and Rue can survive on the plant life around them, why couldn’t Foxface?) Just in general it downplays the part of her that is talented and smart in her own way, one that others underestimate.

This theory only bothers me because it’s treated like it’s canon (it’s literally in the main wiki article on Foxface’s page). And one of the main and only reasons it’s even considered canon is because of one brief shot in the films, not even in the books.
It also takes a really interesting character, and makes her close to a perfect-type in the sense that even when she messed up, oh no she didn’t really because that was her plan all along. And I just personally hate that. If you believe the theory, cool, but I most certainly do not.
