Fic Update: Favors (Hunger Games AU)

Favors. AU from the end of the 74th Hunger Games. After the two-winner rule is revoked, Peeta takes his own life before Katniss can stop him. Her grief-driven words over his body still defy the Capitol and endanger everyone left that she loves. Haymitch and the other victors struggle to help her navigate the dark, dangerous world of mentoring…and in the end, she still becomes the Mockingjay.

Chapter 19: The Three-Eleven-Twelve alliance puts their offensive into action and strike an unprecedented blow to the Career pack, leaving sponsors delighted and Katniss pondering how they’ve become powerful pieces in the Games.

Please to feedback? Love it? Hate it? Especially now that the story is well into the AU, I’m dying to hear readers’ thoughts! Pweese? No question is stupid, no praise is unwelcome, and no disagreement will offend me! Criticism is gladly accepted!

My related fic/collection, A Headcanon History of the Hunger Games, giving details on each and every Hunger Games and victor, is now updated through the 52nd Games with Brutus, Wiress, and Haymitch’s victories!

Writing Haymitch’s chapter also inspired a new one-shot: The Year The Music Died!

Chapter 17: A sea grows in the arena, and Eleven-Twelve alliance adds one more member. Katniss and Haymitch add more sponsors than District 12 has ever had before, but the Career pack is beginning its hunt. Then the bells ring at midnight.

I want to know about the mysterious fourth District 12 victor that Katniss mentions in the first chapter. What was this person? Which year did they win? They’re dead, so I’m inclined to think they must have won very early on, maybe in the first few years of the Games. Did they die of old age? Or something more sinister? (Not necessarily from the Capitol, either–maybe they were overcome with PTSD and put an end to their life?) Did this person mentor Haymitch in his Games, or were they gone before even he came around?

I’d love to hear everyone’s theories on who this person was. I think most people forget there even was a fourth District 12 victor? I remember noticing that the movies left them out. Did you remember there were four victors for 12?

I’ve always thought the fourth victor must have been in the very early years, before the career districts had an opportunity to ramp up their training programs, when the playing field would have been a little more even.

Agree with @xerxia31

When they watch Haymitchs games we never hear about or see footage of a mentor. I don’t believe The Mysterious Fourth Victor was alive anymore at that point.

Oh oh oh! GUYS! What if The Mysterious Fourth Victor™, being Haymitch’s mentor, was killed along with Haymitch’s girl, mother and younger brother?? Either as further punishment for Haymitch’s actions in the arena or because The Mysterious Fourth Victor™ had encouraged/assisted Haymitch in those plans (in an attempt to kick-start a rebellion). A Quarter Quell with double the number of tributes and the 50th anniversary of the Games to boot; a lot of district citizens would have been very upset that year, so it would’ve been a great time to try to bust out a rebellion.

And what better way to punish that young victor than by making him mentor every single tribute from his hopeless district - all by himself - for the rest of his life (or until someone else from Twelve won the Games, half a lifetime later)?

Meet Pauline BalentyI wake up at five in the morning without the help of the alarm clock. Today, eve

Meet Pauline Balenty

I wake up at five in the morning without the help of the alarm clock. Today, even though I’m free from the daily obligation to wake up early, I can’t go back to sleep. Usually, I get up at five to work at the apothecary my family manages next to the district’s main square. However, the factor that frees me from work today is the same that makes me lose sleep.

Today is the day of the Reaping. Actually, it’s my last Reaping day. Or at least the last one that I have to worry about, now that I’m eighteen. Nonetheless, I don’t see any motives to celebrate because, after all, the next Games are going to be… different.

This years marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Hunger Games. Because of that, today’s reaping will draw the tributes that will participate of the second Quarter Quell, a special edition of the games which occurs every twenty five years under specific rules that make the nightmare even worse to the chosen tributes.

This year’s special rules were revealed some months ago, when it was announced that twice as many tributes would be reaped at each district. As a result, two young men and two young women from each of the 12 districts of Panem will be taken to the Capitol to be prepared to fight til death. For an instant, I imagine myself being reaped along with three of my friends. I shake my head, trying to ward off this thought and I get up. Since I will not be able to sleep again, I’ll look for something useful to do until the hour of the reaping, in the afternoon.
