In 1793, Republican French forces lost to coalition troops at the Second Battle of Neerwinden, part of the Flanders Campaign.  But the French recovered and ended the campaign with a resounding vi-diddly-ictory.

In 1885, during the Tonkin Campaign, the French captured the Vietnamese fortress of Bắc Ninh; they did so in few enough strokes to get to the clubhouse under par.

Following controversy over his painting, Les Yeux Chaud (Hot Eyes), at the 1921 Salon D'Automne, Picabia painted The Fig-Leaf over the top of it and ironically subtitled the painting 'Dessin Francais’ ('French Drawing’)
