A couple creature design explorations from The Book of the New Sun. Man-Apes and Alzabo up-top, the Salamander on bottom.
Side note: The Alzabo was almost certainly the biggest influence on the bear creature from Annihilation. Not in a design capacity, but how it functions.

A recently finished character design from Gene Wolfe’s Book of the New Sun, this time, Agilus, carrying the deadly Avern flower before his and Severian’s duel at the Sanguinary Field.
“The new customer was a youth whose face was hidden in an inlaid close helmet, of which down-curving and intertwined horns formed the visor. He wore armor of laquered leather; a golden chimera with the blank, staring face of a madwoman fluttered on his breastplate.”
