#ghostbur
Sometimes it’s difficult to talk about Ghostbur because it feels like a minefield. You need to acknowledge that Ghostbur saw himself as his own person… but also that he was really a narrative tool to examine c!Wilbur and his relationships. If you want to talk about why he was softer at times than Wilbur ever was then you need to also address that he wasn’t justsoft. He wasn’t just comedic relief. He could be cutting and pointed and observant when he wanted. He wasn’t childlike at all despite the fact that fandom always wants to make him so.
He was just shadows and different aspects of a person we’d seen already. He was familiar enough to be hard for the audience (and his family) to clearly say he was a different being entirely. He was different enough that his presence offered no closure.
But man, sometimes I want to talk about what parts of c!Wilbur got left behind. Like is Ghostbur a manifestation of those 7 or 8 times that Wilbur couldn’t bring himself to press the button? The parts that didn’t want to leave Tommy or any of his little taped together family? Did that part of him that threw himself out in front of his enemies for Niki’s sake continue on like a little ember that refused to be smothered entirely?
Ghostbur wasn’t Wilbur’s good intentions. I hate that theory. Ghostbur has an inherent selfishness to his existence that we don’t really talk about enough. He wasn’t there for unfinished business or closure. Hell, at times he actively seemed distraught by people looking for it. He just wanted to exist. His existence also meant the people that cared about Wilbur couldn’t ever let go either. How do you put aside your anger and grief when you can see a manifestation of it every day? When you can clutch to it like a teddy bear during the worst period of your life?
Was Ghostbur a punishment for the Wilbur? It’s been established that Wilbur could see whenever he was talked about in the station. What better way to encourage complete and brutal honesty about Wilbur than a fragment of him wandering around? Worse, to see how people either moved on (or failed to move on) without him there.
Fuck, imagine the person who so desperately wanted to be forgotten and have everything he did erased from the world being forced to sit in silence and think about how some part of him (a part he would bitterly think of as weak) refused to let go.
Ghostbur as a way to talk about c!Wilbur is so fucking interesting if you get past a lot of the boring fandom bits.
I feel like I need to clarify something here.
My issue is how we approach meta with Ghostbur.
Ghostbur as a character being seen as a fully realized character with his own goals, motivations and hopes and desires is absolutely the right take. Ghostbur is a separate character from Wilbur in that regard.
The issue is when we write meta, you can’t separate the two and you can’t act like one was better or different or not built from the same core. Ghostbur is literally a shade. He is a ghost. He has the same inventory, ender chest, memories and bonds with people. When we are looking at why he existed in the story or what purpose his little narrative told, we cannot separate him from Wilbur. He is a narrative device about Wilbur and, even if the character can be treated at his own entity, he is also a broken mirror that gives us insight into the person he is standing in for during his time on the sever.
Ghostbur is complex. Ghostbur is morally interesting in a different way than Wilbur. Ghostbur brings his own things to the table that you can pull apart and talk about for ages. He is his own named character.
But on a meta level, like, he IS without a doubt Wilbur. You gotta juggle both ideas in your head at once if you’re going to talk about him with any real meaning or nuance. He is a person, but he is a shadow. He is a taped collection of parts of Wilbur and those taped together pieces formed their own identity.
