WEIRD FORMAT WEDNESDAY: Pablo Picasso’s Guernica : the 42 preliminary studies on paper reproduced in facsimile, 1990
This book is 2 feet long and consists of a booklet and 31 plates. This facsimile includes an introduction and commentary by the curator of The Picasso Museum in Paris, Marie-Laure Bernadac. Throughout the plates, you can observe Picasso’s process, to peek into his genius.
Picasso’s enormous black and white painting, Guernica, was completed in June of 1937. It is considered one of the most powerful anti-war paintings created.
Πλαστικό χρώμα και σπρέι, τοιχογραφία στα πλαίσια της κατάληψης του κτιρίου της Πρυτανείας (22/02/21-11/03/21) που πραγματοποιήθηκε ως ένδειξη διαμαρτυρίας στον νόμο 4777.
Μια πρώτη, επιφανειακή (ίσως πιο πιασάρικη) περιγραφή του έργου θα ήταν «μία διαφορετική Γκερνίκα», ή «η δική μας Γκερνίκα». Στην πραγματικότητα όμως πρόκειται για κάτι μεγαλύτερο από μια απλή παραλλαγή του γνωστού έργου του Πικάσο.
18 μέρες οξυγόνου. Οι μέρες που τολμήσαμε το ακατόρθωτο, που μέσα στον ζόφο δημιουργήσαμε χώρο να αναπνεύσουμε. Οι μέρες που η ανάγκη για ζωή υπερίσχυσε όλων των (ανα)στολών. Και των καταστολών. Οι μέρες που στα μάτια μας η πόλη μεταμορφώθηκε σε σκακιέρα (μπορείτε να φανταστείτε εσείς ποιοι παίζαν στα λευκά και ποιοι στα μαύρα). Οι μέρες που τα πινέλα μας πάνω στους τοίχους τους έκαναν πιο πολύ θόρυβο απ’ ότι τα γκλοπ τους πάνω μας. Αυτές οι μέρες ήταν δικές μας και αυτό ήταν το αποτύπωμα μας.
Η τοιχογραφία παραμένει επίκαιρη και φέτος, γι’ αυτό έναν χρόνο μετά τρέξατε να την καλύψετε με το αποστειρωμένο λευκό σας, αποδεικνύοντας για άλλη μια φορά πόσο ανίκανοι είστε να αναλάβετε τις ευθύνες των πράξεων σας. Αφού λοιπόν δεν ντραπήκατε να ξανακαταστρέψετε ένα έργο επειδή αναδεικνύει τα εγκλήματά σας, το κάδρο αυτό θα είναι εδώ για να σας θυμίζει πως τίποτα δεν τελειώνει με μια απλή εκκένωση. Τον τελευταίο λόγο θα τον έχουμε πάντα εμείς.
Για εκείνες τις ημέρες μας και για όλες αυτές που θα ‘ρθουν”.
*** Υπενθυμίζεται ότι τον Μάρτιο του 2021, φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες από τη σχολή καλών τεχνών ζωγράφισαν σε τοίχο της εισόδου της πρυτανείας του ΑΠΘ ένα αντίγραφο του περίφημου πίνακα του Πικάσο, που είχε όμως ως βάση την πρόσφατη τότε δράση των δυνάμεων καταστολής στην εκκένωση της κατάληψης πρυτανείας και τις βαρβαρότητες που ακολούθησαν, σε αγαστή συνεργασία με τον πρύτανη. Αυτή η τοιχογραφία καταστράφηκε με εντολή του πρύτανη αποδεικνύοντας πως η τέχνη μπορεί να γίνει ενοχλητική για την εξουσία.
I had seen the Guernica at MOMA when it resided there… then many years later I was lucky enough to see it again in its current home in Madrid at the Museo Reina Sofia… it had lost none of it poignancy with the passage of time, or the change of place or even my personal growth physically and psychologically. I brought back a poster of it for my teenage son, who was into video-games of war at the time… to bring home the reality of war… the horrors lived and felt by regular people. Now I can’t help but wonder if it would help to send a copy to politicians who lead us into hatred and war… the guerrilla fighters who kill innocent people in the name of liberty… to supposed “leaders” who will let others kill or be killed to stay in power… to opposition parties who can’t get pass their politics to unite and save a nation from tyranny… Would they be moved by this as I am? Or do people only see what they want to see…
The nazi Condor Legion destroyed Gernika on a market day following the orders of Francisco Franco. The town was full of people from the surrounding areas who attended the market as well as the refugees come from Durango after the bombing of that town.
The city was burning for 3 days and 3 nights, inspiring Pablo Picasso to paint his masterpiece “Guernica”.
The town had no strategic value, and was bombed to strike the Basque army psychologically since the town guarded the Tree of Gernika, an almost sacred symbol for Basque people, a representation of the Basque old laws and identity.
Despite the horror, when dust settled, the fascists discovered that the tree stood standing. Just like Basque people.
The image was created for @outofsteparts, an amazing arts collective, and is available in the store as a LE (100) Print and a Hand-embellished artist’s print (10). The work is a significant moment in the story I’ve been developing for my comic.
