WE RECYCLED A WEDDING DRESS
…into a wedding dress. For a CORPSE BRIDE. A child bride, which is disturbing, as my 6th grader pointed out, hashtag badmommy. Anyway, we had our first Remakeathon last week, and the brilliant Ricky Becker of the aptly named Spooky Boutique brought a spare gown then attacked it with a spray bottle of brown dye, scissors and thread and acrylic paint. If I fit into it and hadn’t got married 13 years ago, I’d totally wear this on the big day. But instead, daughter gets to wear it on her big day: Friday. (And the school dance last weekend). Happy Halloween.

If you’ve been around on my blog for a minute, you’ve probably seen my cosplay/horror history series, A Century of Glamour Ghouls. That October, I threw together ten cosplays accompanied by tutorials and short histories of horror filmmaking over the 20th century.
Forthe 1950s entry, I covered Vampira in Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) and the intersection of sci-fi and horror. Alas, my hair was short back then and I own(ed) no wigs, so I paired my Vampira look with a generic 1950s hairstyle. Now that my hair is Too Long, and the season of the witch is upon us, it seemed like the right time to revive the horrifying horror hostess.

Halloween Costume Idea:
The Pearl Tower
Measuring 468 meters (1,535 feet) in height, the Oriental Pearl Tower was China’s tallest building when completed in 1994. The modern metropolitan option. Any body shape will do. All you need are three spheres of different sizes and a bit of imagination to make this work.

Halloween Costume Idea:
Goddess of Mercy 观音 Guānyīn
Choose your version: the simple white-robed Guānyīn 观音 aka the Goddess of Mercy (shown here) or the complex thousand-armed bodhisattva, able to reach out to help many people. The Goddess of Mercy carries a willow branch (symbolizing adaptability) and a vase of water (the dew of compassion), though in a crunch, you could probably get away with a house plant.

Halloween Costume Idea:
Chinese vampire 僵尸 Jiāngshī
To pull off the 僵尸 Jiāngshī Chinese Vampire costume you need the signature yellow patch (like a post-it note over your face) and frightening body movements. Jiangshi move by jumping, body stiff, arms out straight. Go solo, or with other Jiāngshī péngyǒu in a coven of vampires.
