#hand quilting
37/42 blocks
Here it is, my oldest quilting wip! Pieced the top back in Summer 2019 and it immediately went on the back burner for the next three years. Partly because I was prioritizing quilts that were gifts for other people, partly because marking out the pattern was a pain (solved that with tailor’s chalk), and partly because I prefer quilting with thread and not pearl cotton. But! We’re on the home stretch.
Soon.

Progress shots of the most recent quilt - started in January 2021 and finished this November! It took a weekend or two to make the quilt top and then the poor thing sat around for half the year while I worked on other projects. Finally got around to basting it at the beginning of September, and from there it was just two+ months of hand quilting each evening!

Next up is a very very neglected quilt from August 2019 - my longest wip yet D:

Happy Go Lucky Baby Quilt by Carla

Made with a charm pack of Happy Go Lucky by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. The blue fabric is Robin’s Egg from Moda Bella and the white is Free Spirit Winter White (I think). I quilted it ¼ from the seams with Aurifil 50 wt in white and hand quilted lines along the borders with Aurifil 12 wt. The binding is from Jenean Morrison’s line Silent Cinema. Backing is from Lizzy House’s line Hello Pilgrim. Blogged at coraquilts.blogspot.ca/2013/06/a-happy-go-lucky-baby-quil…

Last May (2019) I finished up this quilt for some friends our ours who got married. I wanted to make a quilt for them that had the same clean lines and modern feeling as their house and decor.
I made a bunch of HST blocks and arranged in a kind of gradient, mostly greys and neutrals with a few pops of colour in between.

Around that time, I went to a workshop with the Ottawa Modern Quilt Guild, with Johanna Masko on hand quilting.

I brought this quilt along to work on, and added hand quilting to several blocks around the quilt.

I finished it off with straight line quilting (my favourite!) and contrast binding.

I was really happy with how it turned out and the recipients really liked it too!

Quilty Details:
- * 70” square, for a large lap quilt
- * Mix of fabrics, mostly Kona Cotton and prints from Art Gallery Fabrics
- * Backing and binding is a Guicy Guice Quantam print from Andover
- * Straight line quilted at 0.5” spacing, using Wonderfil 40-wt thread, with additional hand quilting using DMC Perle cotton #8 size
I liked how the hand quilting was actually not too visible from afar, but gave a lot of texture when you have it up close, on your lap. I think I’ll try to add more of that hand quilted touch on more projects in the future!
Hand-stitched star: I have been cleaning up in my sewing room over the past few weeks and I found this star that I had hand-quilted a long time ago. I decided just to add some binding to finish it up into a small little quilt - it finishes up at 6.5″ square.
I put it in the kitchen as a pot holder! Always nice to add a bit of colour and have my handmade items around the house.

Baby quilt for my nephew:
Over the Easter long weekend a couple of weeks back, I went to visit my new baby nephew, and brought him a quilt that I have been working on for a long time! This is the first and only quilt that I’ve entirely hand-pieced and hand-quilted. It is also made out of the scraps of the quilts I made his parents for their wedding present, so it has special meaning!
The quilt fit in very well with his adorable nursery and I hope that it will be used and cuddled over the years. It is very crinkly and soft already, and hasn’t yet been washed!
Quilty Details:
- * Approximately 35″ square finished size
- * Hand-pieced using English paper pieced diamonds, using Kona Cotton scraps from the gemstone quilt I made for the baby’s parents’ wedding present
- * Hand-appliqued to backing fabric (Kona Lemon)
- * Hand quilted using perle cotton; 8-gauge for most but 5-gauge (thicker) for the white
- * Backing is an Art Gallery Fabrics print
Linking up with Finish it up Friday.

Baby quilt: I’ve been working little by little on a special baby quilt! This quilt is hand-pieced and hand-quilted for my first niece or nephew (the parents decided not to find out whether the baby is a girl or boy). The quilt was made from the scraps of the wedding quilt that I made for the parents - so it has more meaning for their family!
Ihand appliquéd the English paper pieced ring on to the plain backing fabric and have been using thick perle cotton for the quilting. I will add a few more lines of quilting around to make sure it’s secure, then I’ll finish it up with binding. I think it will be super soft and cuddly for a baby!
