Fly Away Quilt - Finished!

I am finally finished one of my oldest works in progress - the Fly Away quilt that I started back in 2016! I wasn’t sure how to quilt it for a long time, but once I decided to use straight lines, I was able to get it done relatively quickly.

Quilty Details:

Glad to have this one finished and looking forward to having it gifted and into its new home soon!

Quilted knitting bag: After my first drawstring knitting bag, I got the idea that it would be fun to make some more, for myself (for my own multiple knitting projects!) and also as gifts.

I found an improv block in my sewing room that I had pieced together using some scraps from old projects. (I think these are mixed scraps from my pastel-coloured Polarity quilt and my Meadow quilt top - both from 2015!)  I decided it might be fun to add some Essex Linen and then quilt the whole thing, to give it a bit of structure.

I added some pockets on the inside again, one with a zipper and one without. I find that a zippered pocket is really helpful for a knitting bag - I am always misplacing little stitch markers and tapestry needles! The interior is the print from Tamara Kate that I used on the back of the JOY quilt I made earlier this year.

I’m really pleased with how it turned out. I think the texture of the quilting gives it a bit more of tactile and visual interest. I think this one is going to be a gift!

Baby quilt for my nephew:

Over the Easter long weekend a couple of weeks back, I went to visit my new baby nephew, and brought him a quilt that I have been working on for a long time! This is the first and only quilt that I’ve entirely hand-pieced and hand-quilted. It is also made out of the scraps of the quilts I made his parents for their wedding present, so it has special meaning!

The quilt fit in very well with his adorable nursery and I hope that it will be used and cuddled over the years. It is very crinkly and soft already, and hasn’t yet been washed!

Quilty Details:

  • * Approximately 35″ square finished size
  • * Hand-pieced using English paper pieced diamonds, using Kona Cotton scraps from the gemstone quilt I made for the baby’s parents’ wedding present
  • * Hand-appliqued to backing fabric (Kona Lemon)
  • * Hand quilted using perle cotton; 8-gauge for most but 5-gauge (thicker) for the white
  • * Backing is an Art Gallery Fabrics print

Linking up with Finish it up Friday.
