VANS HOUSE PARTIES | TAKING BACK SUNDAY
Taking Back Sunday has been at the forefront of the alternative/emo uprising since the late 90s. Getting started in Long Island, New York as adolescents, they turned to music to work out their angst and heartache. After a few lineup changes, TBS released their debut album in 2002, Tell All Your Friends. The record immediately connected with teenagers working through the same anxieties.
In the following ten years, Taking Back Sunday established themselves as a band with a lot to say while growing and evolving. In 2010 it was announced the original TAYF lineup would reunite to record their fifth studio album titled, Taking Back Sunday. In 2016 TBS signed with indie label Hopeless Records to release Happiness Is… and in 2016 Tidal Wave. Taking Back Sunday is currently celebrating their 20th-anniversary playing shows across the US shows.

VANS HOUSE PARTIES | PRONOUN
Last night House of Vans Chicago was treated to a heartfelt set by Alyse Vellturo, aka Pronoun. Vellturo, a Berklee College of Music graduate, initially had her sights set on managing independent artist, but after a tough breakup, she found herself recording music in her New York apartment to work through the heartache. After all, she could play the piano, guitar, drums, and sing. Those songs became an EP titled; There’s no one around you. The EP was a generous mix of pop/rock and self-reflective lyrics.
In a recent interview with New Noise Magazine Vellturo explained how her solo DIY approach has made her a more dynamic and vulnerable songwriter saying, “My music’s really personal, and I like making it all myself and doing all the parts. A lot of it just ends up with me sitting at my desk and layering a ton of stuff that I probably wouldn’t do if I was just in a studio with a bunch of people.”

VANS HOUSE PARTIES | ROZWELL KID
Pop-punk favorites Rozwell Kid gave the House of Vans Chicago a jolt of power and pizzazz last night. After forming in West Virginia in 2011 Jordan Hudkins, Adam L. Meisterhans, Devin Donnelly and Sean Hallock released their first album The Rozwell Kid LP with Broken World Media. Rozwell Kid found a sweet mixture of 90s rock/grunge and pop-punk with witty and nostalgic lyrics. After the release of The Rozwell Kid LP, it was full steam ahead with more EPs and collaborations.
Most recently in 2017 Rozwell Kid signed with SideOneDummy to release Precious Art. The LP reached #13 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart highlighting a bright future for Rozwell Kid.

VANS HOUSE PARTIES | SAMOHT
Brooklyn R&B singer Samoht is on the rise. The singer-songwriter just released his latest studio album Exit and announced a run of shows to spread his story and passion. Samoht, AKA Thomas Parker, channels his soulful voice and spirituality to create a new age of R&B and soul. Samoht’s music is smooth, profound, and powerful. Last night the House of Vans Chicago witnessed it firsthand.
When it comes to creating music, Samoth says he feels free and uninhibited. He told online blog Rollingout that producing music is limitless, “When I’m creating music, I don’t have any walls up. I open up to whatever sounds, melodies, and lyrics come to me. I could box myself in, but that would put a cap on my true ability. Music [should] flow through me freely. I want music to be just as comfortable with me as I am with it.”

VANS HOUSE PARTIES | ANNA LUNOE
Last night House of Vans Chicago was surprised with a set by Australian DJ, Anna Lunoe. Anna has been a prominent fixture in the EDM scene for over ten years and has established herself as more than just a DJ. With her charismatic presence and enthusiasm for music, Anna has proven herself as a singer/songwriter, producer, and radio host.
In 2012 her debut album Anna Lunoe & Friends took the EDM world by storm. The record’s single “Real Talk” went number one on Beatport Indie Dance Charts for months giving Lunoe stark credibility as an artist and innovator. She’s performed at the most celebrated festivals including Coachella, Lollapalooza and Ultra Music Festival. She continued to release music including 2019’s Right Party, a 4-track EP that brought Lunoe back after a break from music.

VANS HOUSE PARTIES | BANKS
Last night Southern California’s BANKS stunned the House of Vans Chicago with her electric sound and sultry voice. Jillian Rose Banks found music at an early age to cope with her parent’s divorce. As a teenager, the singer-songwriter began writing songs and playing the piano. That experience led her to study psychology at the University of Southern California, earning her bachelor’s degree but continuing to use music as a personal outlet.
Things changed in 2013 when she uploaded “Before I Ever Met You” to Soundcloud and the track gained massive attention. Soon after an EP titled Fall Over was officially released and things took off. Fans became hooked on her angelic and vulnerable voice juxtaposed with dark and moody pop. In 2014 her debut album Goddess charted all over the world including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
On June 11 Banks released the love song “Look What You’re Doing to Me,” featuring Francis and the Lights from her upcoming third studio album, III . The 13-track LP dropped today and will be followed by a world tour. Grab tickets here.

VANS HOUSE PARTIES | KADHJA BONET
Last night the House of Vans Chicago welcomed Los Angeles based songwriter, Kadhja Bonet. Bonet, who’s parents also played a role in the music industry, is known for her soulful psychedelic sound and self-production. Bonet isn’t shy about taking sonic influences from different ends of the spectrum to tell her vibrant stories. In an interview with DIY, Bonet confessed to needing full control to create, saying, “I like having control, and I like having my hands in everything. It’s hard for me to let go.”
In 2018 her most recent album, Childqueen earned rave reviews from NPR applauding Bonet for her limitless sonic approach. The renowned music outlet commented, saying, “Childqueen is loaded with such bits, and that gives it a shapeshifting quality.“
Bonet is set to play the Oyafestivalen Weekend Ticket in Toyenparken, Oslo this August, tickets here.

VANS HOUSE PARTIES | FREE NATIONALS
Free Nationals are a collective best know as the backup band for Anderson.Paak. Made up of Jose Rios (guitar, backing vocals), Ron Tnava Avant (keyboards, backing vocals), Kelsey Gonzalez (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Callum Connor (DJ, drums, backing vocals). In 2018 the collective released their debut single, Beauty & Essex featuring Daniel Caesar and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
This past June Free Nationals dropped a second single, ‘Time’ featuring the late MacMiller and Kali Uchis. When releasing the track, the band shared a post on Instagram saying, “This song was so much fun to make and is exactly how we want to remember our brother Mac, we hope you guys like it.”

VANS HOUSE PARTIES | ANDERSON .PAAK
Brandon Paak Anderson, better known as Andreson .Paak; is a dynamic hip hop producer and songwriter. Born in Southern California, he began producing songs in his childhood bedroom sparking an interest in all aspects of music. The Grammy Award-winning singer/rapper/producer has released four full-length albums with his fifth, ‘Ventura’ dropping this past spring. The album landed at number 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 becoming his first album to reach the top 10 in the U.S.
Along with his music, Paak has collaborated with A Tribe Called Quest, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre and many other notable names in hip hop. This spring he embarked on “The Best Teef In the Game Tour” with his band, The Free Nationals and you can find summer dates here.
