The Keeper Of Fragile Things
It always comes out of the blue. Every single time. She knows he has a hard time adjusting to the life she takes for granted, that he finds it difficult to live among the cords and electromagnetic fields and gently whirring ticking buzzing machines. So she understands why he runs, but understanding doesn’t mean it’s easier on her.
Sometimes she finds it hard to calm her heart when she wakes alone in a bed, the spot where he lies now cold from the loss of the internal furnace that’s unmistakably him. He’s warm like a wildfire, different to his brother who ignites on cue but with the cerulean flame in his eyes that she has no fear of now. No, it’s internal, uncontrolled, innate, part of him wholly, like the twining roots of her heritage that circle her limbs and anchor her to the ground like a tree.
Sometimes, at night, when it’s just them, the fire he ignites in her spirit comes close to how he feels against her skin: an intense, intoxicating warmth she can’t get enough of. He says it’s normal, it’s how The Mouth Breathers fall under his spell, how they can slip between worlds without a care or a blip in their moments, but she thinks it might just be magic.

I am seriously so addicted to this story! It is such a fast-paced exciting read that I couldn’t put it down. I loved finding out part of the origin story of how she became a werewolf. That surprised me and wasn’t what I expected, but it makes so much of what is happening make perfect sense and adds such an interesting dynamic. The world building of this AU is amazing and I am really enjoying each new bit of information we learn about their world and how it works. Now sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next chapter.
—In which Hvitserk falls for a good church girl, much to the disapproval of her family who finds out and marries her to a no-good, very bad man. I pictured the boards, in order, as their romance’s journey. From their first few times together — alone, flirting —, to their secret meetings — where they talk, eat, and make love —, to her marriage to the other man, and up to the point where Hvitserk — sick of seeing her mistreated and unhappy — kills the man and has to run away.
—The last board kinda doesn’t fit in the story. It’s more of a “reverend who falls for a temptress and has to cold sweat his way through the afternoons drinking tea at her parent’s home” type of thing.
