In 1921, Fred Rouse, a Black packinghouse worker, was brutally lynched in Fort Worth, Texas in front of a crowd of over 100 onlookers. He was first assaulted with iron bars by a mob of White union workers, who accused him of breaking their strike. 

Then the White mob pulled him out of the hospital where he was receiving treatment and killed him. Last year, a century after his death, the Equal Justice Initiative, with the help of Rouse’s grandson, created a memorial for the slain man.

Now, Fort Worth is again reckoning with its racist past as the former Texas headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is being transformed into the Fred Rouse Center for Arts and Community Healing. The initiative is spearheaded by the Texas arts nonprofit Transform 1012 N. Main Street, which purchased the building in 2021. The center is expected to open in 2025.

Brendan McCann’s science-inspired dress for this year’s Met Gala!

Every first Monday in May since 1948, society’s cultural haut monde gathers under the guise of fundraising for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute to compete for the most fashionable, and increasingly most outlandish, outfit in the Met Gala.

Brendan McCann’s (an artist and art teacher based in New York) handmade dress honors the real celebrities of our era: the scientists and medical experts who created safe and effective coronavirus vaccines in record time.

His dress features a flared skirt of paper vaccination cards and an asymmetrical corset composed of jeweled Band-Aids. The ensemble comes together with a towering needle headpiece and a plastic “FAUCI” clutch filled with donuts freely provided by Krispy Kreme to anyone who is vaccinated. Purple latex gloves complete the look.

“The vaccination couture is made out of a table cover, poster board, craft foam, and other materials I had lying around my apartment, and some things from the dollar store,” McCann said to Hyperallergic.

“One day I hope I can attend the actual Gala,” he added. “It would be a dream come true. Even if they just want me to vacuum the steps … I’m available!” (Hey Max Hollein, we hope you’re listening!)

I have always been fascinated with paintings related to Cythera, by the French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau; the Embarkation for Cythera, the Pilgrimage to Cythera, and Les Deux Cousines.  In the ancient world, Cythera, one of the Greek islands, was thought to be the birthplace of Venus, goddess of love.  The subject of Cythera may have been inspired to Watteau by certain 17th century operas or plays.  In Florent Carton Dancourt’s Les Trois Cousines (The Three Cousins), a girl dressed as a pilgrim steps out from the chorus line and invites the audience to join her on a voyage to the island, where everyone will meet their ideal partner.  I suppose in uncertain times I feel a call to those Arcadian places of peace and serenity, and it’s worth noting that some aspects of the models and figures in this piece were created in virtual reality using Oculus Quest 2, which is a first for me. The idea of escaping into a virtual environment is directly related to my obsession with dissociation and the paracosms of the stories I have built up in my mind over a lifetime. ~Ray Caesar

One of my many imagined anxieties is a form of agoraphobia, the fear of the outside world, and in my case, an overwhelming astonishment of how huge the sky is above my head. This compounded by my certain suspicious nature that gravity may prove to be a theory that is in fact unproven and fallible. 
Each day I force myself to put on my coat and shoes and hitch up my little rat terrier “Finnegan” in his vestments and venture out for what I call “My Daily Constitutional”. I think I first heard the term in the 1960s comedic movie “ The World of Henry Orient” with Peter Sellers.  As I have now watched that film hundreds of times as it reminds me of my childhood steeped in a dissociative world of my own making.
Every single day I stand in front of that door that leads to the outside world and as Finnegan gives me a little mental shove, we are off on one of our many daily constitutionals.  I let him guide the way as we walk through the now pandemically empty streets of University of Toronto and like him, I keep my head down and generally try to avoid looking up at that amazing, glorious and stunningly beautiful sky. ~Ray Caesar
