The perplexed expression etched all over your lover’s princely features would have been funny had you not been in the midst of a mini-breakdown. Hair matted against your forehead in clumps, sprawled on your knees, hands combing through the dewy grass in frantic swoops. It was a wonder how your lover was still willing to help you out in your mad quest for something you’d only read about in books.

“Are you sure we’re supposed to be looking for a four-leafed clover, and not a three-leafed one?” Licht asked carefully, gazing at you with a twinge of concern as he took in your appearance. Not that you weren’t beautiful. To him, you were always the most beautiful person in the room. But, he had never seen you this frantic before, and to think the whole reason why was because he was scheduled to be sent off to the Obsidian-Rhodolite border tomorrow to deal with some soldiers edging onto Rhodolite territory.

“Yes! I’m positive it’s a four-leafed clover, Licht. I read about it in Good Luck Charms Throughout History in Chevalier’s personal library.” Your response came out higher-pitched than intended, and you took in a deep breath, willing your racing heart to calm down. “I haveto find one or else you—I mean… something unlucky might happen!” If you were honest with yourself, you’d been worried ever since Licht had told you he was going on a campaign with his troops and some of the other Princes to the border of Rhodolite and Obsidian. It wasn’t that you didn’t trust him to come home safely, but a small part of you wished that you could cradle him and protect him from any harm that might come his way.

With a deep sight, Licht kneeled down right beside you on the damp grass, not caring that the shins of his trousers quickly began to soak up the moisture and began to sift through the grass with you.

“Alright… fine. We’ll look for just a little bit more, okay? If we don’t find one by the time the sun sets, I’m forcing you to go back to the castle. You can’t skip all your meals today; it’s not good for you….”

Tentatively, you agreed with a slight nod and returned to your search. Maybe, just maybe, if you found a four-leaf clover, all of this ongoing tension between Obsidian and Rhodolite would be over, and your lover wouldn’t have to be called away to the battlefield so often. You hadn’t always been so concerned for him, but ever since the last time he came back, covered in his own blood and that of the Obsidianite soldiers’, with that hauntingly empty gaze in his eyes, you’d wished he would never have to go back.

Unfortunately, after another hour of searching, there was still no sight of the elusive four-leafed clover. Despite your many protests, Licht ended up dragging you away from the meadow back to the Rhodolite castle, where he was on the unfortunate receiving end of your complaints the entire ride back.

**

With a few delectable dishes laid out in front of you, you finally let out a heavy sigh and resigned to your fate. Maybe it wouldn’t be that bad this time, even if Licht came back with a couple of wounds. After all, he was one of the most talented swordsmen in Rhodolite, placing third only behind Leon and Chevalier. Not only that, all of his troops were as talented and disciplined as he was. Logically, you knew that nothing would happen to him, yet that little nagging feeling that was weighing down your heart just didn’t seem to go away.

“Why is the four-leafed clover so important to you?” Licht asked pensively between bites of his steak. “I mean, what unlucky thing do you think will happen?”

And it was now or never. You knew you had to tell him, but you also knew that he would likely blame himself for making you feel this way if you did. Of course, the way you felt wasn’t rational, but when it came to love, what was? “To be honest… I’ve been really worried ever since you told me you have to go back to the border to fight the Rhodolitian soldiers… I trust you, and I believe you’ll always come back to me, but a little part of me is worried that all of this war, and all of this bloodshed is going to hurt you….” The silence that fell between the two of you was deafening, and the only thing you could hear was the loud, erratic thumping of your heart. “I know it’s silly… but I thought that if I found a four-leafed clover, you might not have to go… maybe, by some miracle, Obsidian and Rhodolite would work through the issues and sign a peace treaty. Is it naïve of me to think that?”

Although you knew Licht fairly well now, you couldn’t have predicted that he’d be so touched by your actions. Half a second later, you felt the warmth of his body, hands cradling your head delicately to his chest. “I’m sorry….” Soft whispers ghosted against your ear. “If I wasn’t like this… if you hadn’t fallen in love with me… you wouldn’t have these worries….”

You quickly shook your head, looking up at him with surprise in your gaze. “No, I don’t regret falling in love with you even for a second. You’re the best thing that’s happened to me. I just… I’m just a worry-wart. Don’t worry about me, Licht. Just go out there tomorrow and make sure you’re safe when you return.”

And the two of you spent the rest of the night lying face to face in your bed, pressing sweet and gentle kisses to the other’s lips. Yet, when morning came, Licht was gone, and that nagging feeling at the back of your mind returned.

You spent the next couple of days putting all of your efforts into completing your duties as Belle to the best of your ability. And to everyone else’s credit, they did their best distracting you from worrying about your beloved Licht. It helped, to an extent, until you came across something minor that would immediately set your mind racing to worst-case scenarios involving Licht. The last time it happened, it was because Yves had made an off-hand comment about being able to incorporate carrots in his cooking, as Licht’s most hated food was carrots.

“Have you heard that Prince Leon and Prince Licht are coming back today?” Rio asked off-handedly, half expecting that you’d already heard the news, especially with how fixated you’d been on the sixth Prince’s wellbeing.

“What?!” You could hardly believe your ears, and you blinked a couple times at your best friend before asking him to repeat himself. “Are you serious? Did you hear anything else? Are they hurt?”

Your best friend raised his hands in the air as though he was being held at gunpoint. He might as well have, with how rapidly you fired questions at him. “Woah, woah. Slow down! I haven’t heard anything other than Prince Leon and Prince Licht are scheduled to come back today. Nothing else, though I think if they were wounded, they would have told us to prepare the infirmary for them.” He placed his hand gently on your shoulder and gave you a reassuring squeeze. It was a welcome gesture, especially with how troubled you felt at the moment. “Why don’t we go get Prince Yves and bake a dessert to welcome them back? I know Prince Licht is a big fan of your darioles.”

That’s how you ended up spending the rest of your afternoon, toiling away in the kitchen with Yves, making enough desserts to feed an entire army. The first hour had been rough, with Yves being a bit of a micromanager in the kitchen. However, the two of you soon fell into a rhythm. Not only that, Rio had somehow assigned himself the duty of official taste tester, taking the liberty to pop in a couple of test sweets here and there and comment on how they tasted. It was absolutely pointless, as he had nothing but raves for each dessert item you two made.

You’d spent the entire afternoon waiting for Licht to return. The sky had now darkened, and you were sure that Licht his troops weren’t going to be returning that day. Finally, after the seventh time that Yves nagged at you to return to your room, you ceded to his orders.

A soft knock on your door jolted you from your fears. “Who is it?”

There was no response from the visitor, but a soft knock could be heard again. With a huff, you jumped up from your bed and swung your door open, ready to give the mystery visitor a piece of your mind. Yet, that moment never came, as you were rendered speechless at the sight of your lover, gentle smile adorning his face, and looking perfectly fine, albeit a little tired, everywhere else.

“Licht!” Your voice rang through the air as you immediately wrapped your arms around his slim waist. “You’re home!”

“I’m sorry I’m late. I got caught up doing something….” He trailed off uncomfortably, face visibly flushing to a light pink.

It was a sight to see, especially with the way his flush contrasted against his alabaster skin. That’s when you pulled back from him and noted how one of his arms was held behind his back, clearly hiding something from your view. “What’s that?” You asked, gesturing to his hand.

“I felt bad for questioning you when you told me about the four-leafed clover… and I know how much it means to you… So, on the way back, I took a quick detour and told everyone to go ahead so I could look for this.” And with a quick motion, he showed you the palm of his hand. Sitting in the centre of his palm was the most perfect, delicate little four-leafed clover you’ve ever seen.

“Wh—what?! Where did you find that?” You blinked a couple times and rubbed at your eyes, too shocked to believe that the clover was real. “Howdid you even find it?”

“Let’s just say I got lucky,” Licht said, placing the four-leafed clover gently in your hand. The incredulous look on your face was enough to cause his ice-cold heart to overflow with joy. You were absolutely adorable – the way your eyes sparkled with excitement. He couldn’t help himself as he quickly leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss against your lips. “By the way, I don’t need a four-leafed clover to bring me luck… I have you. You’re my lucky charm… But thank you for always caring about me, and thank you for loving me.“

"I know you’ll always be okay, Licht. But I can’t help it sometimes… I just can’t imagine my life without you. Promise me, even if I’m your lucky charm, that you’ll carry the clover around? For me?” The pleading look you shot him was extremely effective, as his gaze softened even more, and he let out a sigh.

“Okay, just for you…”
