Dendê is a recurrent topic in Capoeira Angola songs, and gave the name to my group@dende_de_mare .The Dendê-nut, fruit of the dendezeiro (Elaeis guineensis, also known as african oil palm) is used to make azeite de dendê, essential ingredient of Salvador de Bahia’s mundane and sacred cuisine. The oil palm was brought from the african continent to brazil probably at the same time as the first enslaved people, and is an important link to origins and ancestrality. Iemanjá
from my master project Cancioneiro Ilustrado at @illustration_udk @udkberlin
The name Iemanjá comes from the iorubá expression “Yèyé omo ejá” which means “mother whose children are fish”. Also called Queen of the Sea, she’s the orixá of fertility and the ocean, honoured not only in Nigeria, but in Brazil and many other countries of the afro-diaspora. In Salvador da Bahia she is celebrated traditionally on the 2nd of february in Rio Vermelho neighbourhood.

Hey everyone! As some of you already know I am working on an illustrated Capoeira Angola songbook as my master project at @illustration_udk ,this is basically the reason I never post anything these days as I am busy as hell day and night, but I’ll try to share small pieces of it during the next weeks. There is also going to be the possibility to pre-order the complete risograph printed book and get it in april! Stay tuned for the launch of the pre-order and let me know what you think of all this!
Btw these are small illustrations from the Ladainhas-part of the songbook. Ladainha literally means ‘litany’ and is a solo sung mostly in the beginning of a capoeira 'roda’. These are about a man playing with the devil, a thunderstorm at sea, Mestre Traíra & a mangrove crab.
