‘You gotta stay who you are, not who you were’ | A Beth Greene Fanmix

“It’s beautiful… Whoever did this, cared. They wanted these people to get a funeral. They remember these things were people… Before all this. They didn’t let it change them in the end. Don’t you think that’s beautiful?”

Up - Black Handed Kites

Black Handed Kites are a really great indie folk band based in Cape Town, South Africa. They have a raw, natural, rugged and folksy sound that is unique to them.

If you are an old soul, love a little dirty rock ‘n roll, are touched by blues and enjoy having a good time kicking it back around a bonfire with a couple beers, then Black Handed Kites are for you.

Man, they are just so cool

They originally recorded their own music video to “Up” on an iPhone, which caught the attention of boom.fm and Cannes award-winning director, Robin Goode, who re-recorded it.

The result? This baby.

“From ye old Western town, has this merry preacher past his glory days? Or does he still have something to give…”

- Syre & Fresko//2014

Today, the Parkington Sisters added a video to their live performance playlist of ‘September’ from when I was lucky enough to see them at Joe’s Pub. I know I’ve already posted one live version of this song, but I love these girls and this song so much I think it deserves to be posted twice.

While the sisters’ recorded songs certainly showcase their talent, it is during their live performances that they truly shine. Each voice maintains its individual warmth while somehow also seamlessly blending to create a sound rich with color as if dyed by hand. There’s a rustic care and craft present in these performances that make me ache for my upstate upbringing.

Plus, if you’re still looking for a Christmas gift for the folk-lover in your life, you can order their new Christmas EP! Each is handmade and available for a mere $10 HERE!

In the meantime, watch the rest of the playlist and be charmed by their onstage antics!

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to go see the Parkington Sisters over at Joe’s Pub. Little did I know, I would be introduced to Tall Tall Trees, who blew me away with his one-man-band charm, and has easily managed to become one of my new favorite musicians.

The above video showcases only a portion of this man’s talent, summoning sounds so full from a single banjo! I’m always a big fan of innovation, especially in genres generally considered to be more traditional, and Tall Tall Trees practically defines the term with his music.

And the best part is, he’s working on a new album - and you can help! Watch his pledge music video HERE and please give what you can to support this truly talented and independent musician!

With homegrown harmonies and a talent deserving of a big city audience, tomorrow, Thursday, October 9th the Parkington Sisters play Joe’s Pub in New York City.

If you’re in the area and have any liking for the warmth a good folk tune can bring, this band will deliver a feeling like a prime place by the fireside. Come escape the clamor and cacophony of the city and join me at Joe’s Pub at 9:30pm.

For tickets, click here!

Look out for the review of their recent EP release, as well as the live show, sometime this weekend!

You like Lord Huron? Their early work really captures the human terror of loneliness, personifying abandonment as various supernatural events. But when Long Lost came out in 2021, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The titular Long Lost single recontextualizes isolation as self-given power and liberation. Some people don’t like the retro Americana sound, but I think the album is fantastic!
