Yamato (2005)
Katsumi Kamio (Tatsuya Nakadai) is a 78 year old fisherman who spent the last 60 years sleepwalking through life, not knowing why he is the only one who survives the war while his family and friends have died.
One day, he came across an odd lady at the harbour who tries to talk to every boat captain into taking her to a specific location which he realises by the coordinates given, is the place where the battleship Yamato was sunk.
He learns that she is the daughter of his fellow shipmate who survived the sunken Yamato and died recently. His last wish was to dispersed his ashes at the place where the ship was sunk to be laid rest with his fellow shipmates.
The story then takes back and forth between the present and the past, mostly the past, showing Kamio younger days (Kenichi Matsuyama) with his family and friends, from the time he joined the Navy till the time he survived the war.
It shows the harshness of the working conditions and training regime on board the Yamato in order to get the best out the sailors, and the strong camaraderie formed among the sailors through hardship and the horrors of war.
How the civilians such as Kamio’s mother who resented the war and Kamio’s childhood crush who doesn’t really know what is happening became victims of war due to the crimes and cruelty of their own military governments.
It reminds me of Hollywood’s Valkyrie (2008) starring Tom Cruise about a few good men who opposed the war by Hitler and those who disagreed with the Furher but did not dare to voice out for fear of being executed.
It’s as good as the WWII films of Isoroku (2011) which is about Admiral Yamamoto, Tora Tora Tora (1970) which is about Pearl Harbour, (Midway 1976&Midway 2019), which is about the critical war that turn the tide of the Pacific War and The Great War of Archimedes (2021) which is about the conspiracy surrounding the design and development of the Yamato battleship.

Katsumi Kamio (Kenichi Matsuyama) joined the Imperial Navy at the age of 15 after his elder brother was drafted into the war and died. He promised his mother and childhood crush, Taeko Nozaki (Yu Aoi) that he will return safely.
After the Yamato was sunked, Kamio survived and made it back but his mother had died from an air raid and Taeko who works a new job in Hiroshima is sick from the radiation but is able to meet him one last time before she dies.
Kamio’s mother hated the war and couldn’t understand the need for the military government to take away her husband, children and Taeko for their war efforts but did not dare to voice out for fear of being arrested by the nationalists.

Futaba Yoshioka (Tsubasa Honda) never really did fit in or had any friends when she was in middle school except with a kid like her named, Kou Tanaka. But after he suddenly left town with his family, she finds herself alone.
Few years later, Futaba goes to high school and bumped into a kid with an uncanny resemblance to Kou, except that his name is Kou Mabuchi (Masahiro Higashide) and his personality is the polar opposite of Kou Tanaka.
Curious by this mysterious encounter, Futaba is determined to find the truth. And if he is the same person, why the change of name and personality? From someone who was timid and kind to someone cold and bold.
As Futaba searches for the truth, her life began to change with the emergence of few other “outcasts” like herself, who would later became her true friends and she owe it all to Kou, who had changed her life since his appearance.

This is a 2015 Japanese romantic drama series, starring Taishi Nakagawa and Maika Yamamoto. It is based on the manga series of the same name by Shungiku Uchida. Shunichi Minami (Taishi Nakagawa) is a high school student with good grades and suprisingly good looks. He is the heartthrob of every girls hearts and dreams. But it ain’t easy to get close to him, because he is really shy and quiet. Chiyomi Horikiri (Maika Yamamoto) on the other hand, is the opposite Minami. She is so bright and supportive of her friends. Her greatest passion is dancing and she would anything for it. Minami and Chiyomi were really good childhood friends, and they were each others first love. Everything was going great, until Minami’s dad left his Minami for his new love. From that point on, Chiyomi and Minami drifted apart, even though they were next door neighbours. One day, Chiyomi decided to talk out with her parents about going to her favourite dance group’s workshop, which was in Tokyo. Her parents did not agree with her, because the college entrance exam was coming up and Tokyo was so far away. Chiyomi kept arguing, even though her parents refused. They didn’t keep up with her, to the point where Chiyomi’s dad suddenly slapped her right on the face. Chiyomi felt sorrowful and leaves the house. While she was walking back home after buying soy sauce, which her parents texted her to buy. She meets Minami and opens up her feelings to him. He tells her that he had stopped liking her and he has no feelings for her anymore. She got heartbroken when she heard this and she runs away. On the way, her umbrella flies away of the strong wind and fails to get the grip of it. There she ends up in the hollow cave beside the park, while trying to avoid the rain. The cave looked so familiar and then she remembers that is where her and Minami told that they love each other. She wishes that everything could go back to the way it was when they were little. And with a blink of an eye, Chiyomi becomes the size of the one-inch princess, that the grandma told them about. That is when Prince Minami comes to the rescue!
