Pirates, eat your heart out: Rolls-Royce envisions crewless drone freight ships

Rolls-Royce doesn’t just make cars. Technically, the Rolls-Royce this story refers to doesn’t make cars at all, as it sold its car division to BMW back in the 1990s. No, the Roll-Royce I’m talking about is the jet engine and ship manufacturer. And its Ocean Blue team has a wild new idea: crewless drone freighters.

In 1941, while WWII raged on in Europe, a secret group of GE engineers were tasked with building the first American jet engine, bringing it to mass production, and helping the Allies win the war.
Joseph Sorota, 96, was still a student when he joined GE’s factory in Lynn, 10 miles north of Boston. Soon enough, he was thrust into the opaque world of the industrial war effort, becoming employee number 5 of an inner circle of engineers that knew about America’s efforts to help England. Because of their secrecy, they were known as ’The Hush-Hush Boys.’
Sorota — now one of the last living members of the legendary team — set out to win the war, but ended up shrinking the world. Read and watch more of his story here.

Happy Pi Day, everyone!
From our GEnx jet engines to the massive ecoROTR, circles and spheres are fundamental to the GE family of machines. And what better day to celebrate the beauty and utility of circles than today.
After logging more than 8,000 hours and nearly 17,000 cycles of ground and flight testing, the latest-generation Boeing 737 MAX, powered by a pair of advanced LEAP-1B engines has made its maiden flight. The CFM LEAP is the world’s first jet engine to include 3D-printed fuel nozzles and engine shroud made from tough, lightweight materials called ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). While providing double-digit improvements in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the engine reduces noise and emissions. Read more about CFM LEAP and it’s first flight on GE Reports.

It takes tough love to test a jet engine. Our team in Peebles, OH subjects engines to grueling trials to make sure they keep working when they fly into hailstorms, dust clouds or even ingest a goose. Some tests are more rigorous than others, but “you’ve got to prove that your engines are good,” says Brian DeBruin, who runs the test operations site in Peebles. GE Aviation has shipped its 1,000th GEnX engine. The roll out comes just 5 years after the first production engine was built at #GE’s Durham, NC facility. Fun Fact: If all these engines were placed end to end, they’d cover 56 American football fields!

Emily, a process engineer at GE Aviation in Auburn, AL is all suited up to remove a print from a Direct Metal Laser Melting machine. These machines additively manufacture metal components for CFM’s best-selling LEAP jet engine, printing in 20 micron layers — roughly 1/3 the width of a human hair.
