“I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain—and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
One luminary clock against the sky
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.”

Butterflies & Blossom Necklace
Hand carved in English Lime wood. 11.5cm / 4.5in.

Inspired by the work of Grinling Gibbons the necklace is extreme in its relief with a couple of the butterfly wings extending up to 3cm / 1.2in out from the flowers.

To finish the piece I simply brushed oil onto the butterflies to enhance the contrast with the blossom flowers.

My intention with the design of this Oak necklace was to echo the lines of the collar bone and to flow like real oak leaves draped around the neck. Much like the Water Lily necklace I carved a while back it’s sculpted to the curve of the chest and to be a sort of statement piece of jewellery.

Carved by knife in English Oak. 11.5cm (4.3in) x 8.2cm (3.2in).

I hope you like it and that you can forgive the huge watermark / branding.

Still very much a work in progress and going through the inevitable ‘ugly duckling’ phase that all of my carvings seem to go through before they’re finished. My ambition with this ‘ode to Grinling Gibbons’ (yes, I know it’s not the most imaginative working title!) is to make it the most dramatically three dimensional necklace I’ve carved yet. I really want the flowers and butterflies to seem to hover, weightless below the wearers collar bone… hopefully you can see this concept slowly emerging through the wood, as rough as it clearly is!!

Fingers crossed that I actually get this necklace finished before the Grinling Gibbons: Centuries in the Making exhibition starts at Compton Verney next week!

Young Cernunnos pendant.
Carved by knife in Holly.

In Celtic lore and mythology Cernunnos was the lord of forest beasts. Although often depicted as a man with stag antlers I prefer to imagine him in pure stag form.

Along with my other recent pieces, this one will be added to my shop in an update on the day of Samhain.

(That’s the 31st October)

•Feldspars are the most diverse and widespread minerals in the earth’s crust.
•Moonstone is the most familiar gem-quality member of the feldspar group.
•Moonstone is a part of the feldspar group, and is a variety of the species orthoclase within that group.
•Moonstone is a composite of two feldspar minerals, orthoclase and albite. After the orthoclase and albite have come together they cool and separate into alternating layers that are stacked on each other.
•Moonstone is known for having an ethereal misty glowing look. This phenomenon is called adularescence.

•Adurlarescence is occurs when light falls between the stacked layers of orthoclase and albite and scatters it.

•Rainbow moonstone has a multicolored adularescence over a light bodycolor. However it is not actually moonstone. It is a variety of labradorite (often from Madagascar) and rainbow moonstone is a trade misnomer.

*The necklace features moonstones and labradorite set in silver. It was made by Danish Designer Georg Jensen between 1915-1927 and currently resides at the Victoria & Albert Museum.*
