Genre | Single Father!Jin, Cafe Owner!reader, Unrequited Love!au, Angst, Future Smut

Summary | Ever since the day he walked through the front door of your cafe hand in hand with his sweet daughter on one gloomy afternoon in the middle of winter, he had captured your heart without him even knowing it. All the time, you had chosen to stay on the sidelines, watching him mend his broken heart in silence while he teaches his own daughter that it was okay to be a kid despite the pain that they shared. You know you shouldn’t be so infatuated with him or let this feeling go any deeper. Because nothing could prepare you when you are forced to watch him move on, completely unaware that he is about to be breaking your heart into pieces.

Ratings | PG-13, +18 / M for Mature; appropriate warnings will be applied on each chapter whenever necessary.

Cross post | AO3 | Inkitt (coming soon!)

Author’s Note | Originally commissioned by @rm4lyf ; I have decided to release this one as a drabble series to present the timeline more appropriately and make the storyline work. Chapters will be posted weekly.

chapter x. sweet melody-2

Looking back, you would sometimes compare your life to the stories that you have read from those romance novels that you have loved so much when you were younger.

You were sixteen when you began to harbour a crush on your brother’s best friend. Both of them had been inseparable since junior high, especially after they both entered the basketball team together, and Aron had always spent a lot of time at your house to allow you to ogle at him at every chance you got.

At first, you had known that it would be impossible for him to reciprocate the feeling that you had for him, and yet you did nothing to stop it when the feeling had developed at some point when you kept on seeing him around. Still, you didn’t think much of it when Aron started spending more time at your house, sometimes stealing his chances to slip away from your brother to be able to see you even if all he did was to tease and joke around with you like an older brother would.

finally finally finally… a look into OC’s past, what a tragedy indeed! No wonder she doesn’t drive and his brother pick her up and drop her off. This just shows that each person has its own healing, healing is not timebound. Each person has their own way of coping up and healing and moving on. For Seokjin its a year, but for OC, no. Up until now she has not opened herself up. Or maybe, it takes the right person? For OC it took Seokjin’s arrival to finally let herself move on and feel something again, while Seokjin it was shorter coz OC was there on the very 1st day.

We are nearing the end, and i wanted so much for them to have their happiness - together or otherwise. They both deserve it.

I can never thank you enough, Dia! this is such an amazing story. I don’t know what you do in your dungeon, but this surpass everything i could ever want or expected. Thank you for not cutting corners. I always tease you about splitting story and about exceeding the word count you yourself has set, but it only shows how dedicated you are to a story.

Author’s Note | A longer chapter with this one (I’m sorry T^T) and another case of splitting a chapter into two to make things work. Roughly edited, so I might return to fix stuff once the story’s completed. I hope you’ll enjoy this one!

chapter ix. sweet melody-1

You can no longer remember the last time you found yourself in a moment like this. Surrounded by nothing else but warmth that you just want to embrace it forever and curl inside it to hide away from the painful world and never let go.

You had no idea what to expect when you came back from the back kitchen to find your older brother sitting in Seokjin’s booth. Never once had you ever imagined seeing both men sitting together and having a conversation the way they did, but watching it happening right in front of your eyes felt as if you were witnessing both of your worlds colliding together.

And surprisingly, you didn’t find anything wrong with it at all.

chapter viii. drowning-2

It takes another two weeks before Minnie joins Seokjin and his daughter as they return to the cafe. This time, it had been Minnie who requested to go before Seokjin even had the chance to arrange for a special visit where they could all come together.

The moment Minnie suggested for them to go after working hours that day, he could already tell that there was something going on. That something wasn’t quite right.

As a matter of fact, he had noticed a lot of changes happening with his girlfriend for quite some time. Especially since she hasn’t been joining them on their hot chocolate and cinnamon bread dates after what had happened on their last visit to your cafe together.

yesssssss!!! finally!!! we’re almost finish (if Dia behaves & does not spend any time at her dungeon we only have 2 chapters, but knowing Dia she might end up having 1-2 extra chapters more, lol). honestly, i super love the development, Seokin finally realizing things and its ok that he took his time really. i admire Minnie, she wasn’t vindictive or angry at all. it takes so much maturity to read the situation for what it is and to let go peacefully. waiting for this fic was so worth it!

chapter vii. drowning-1

Have I gotten this all wrong?

Seokjin cannot shake the feeling that he may have gone over his head.

As a father, the only thing that Seokjin has ever wanted was to provide a good life for his daughter. All he ever wanted was to be able to do the best that he could to make sure that his little girl would continue to enjoy her childhood, especially for a child who had been much too young to understand grief the way adults could.

He has kept his chin up and stayed strong for the sake of keeping Soojin happy and teaching her how to be strong, hiding his own wounds while making sure that life will continue the way it should for her to grow up like any other children her age.

He has followed all the steps he had learned as a newly single father, took in everyone’s suggestions and did everything to the T. For everything that he has done, for every choice that he has made, he always made sure that Soojin would always come first.

The first decision that he has ever made for his own benefit was to start a relationship with a younger woman like Minnie.

its not surprising that it took a long time for Seokjin to come to these realizations. He lost his wife and he was grieving, he is not in a good space. Friends have good intentions most of the time, but i think going out on a date when he is not ready muddle his mind a bit, much less start a new relationship. On the other hand, our reader has 3 years to recover, yet she is not done yet. I dont think one can ever fully move on from any kind of loss. But, she is in a much better headspace and i admire her so much for not taking advantage of Seokjin’s situation, you know. I thought she was too late in letting her feelings known but now i realize that she ubderstand what Seokjin is going through coz shes been there before and she knows that he is not ready.

Whenever i read a series of mini series i always get scared coz as much as i want a happy ending i know that an author can go the way of realism, and sometimes that means the main character not getting together. I think that this is one of those story i wont mind if they end up just friends. For me a happy ending for them both is not to hurt that much over their loss, recover from their loss and find their happy ending, with or without each other. Dies that make sense?

Thanks Dia, this story is so much more than i expected. The prompt is something really close to my heart. Though a different loss, its still a loss. Thanks for breathing life into the prompt.

chapter iv. mortals

“Welcome to Cinnamon Bliss.”

Nari’s cheerful voice continues to fill the whole cafe for almost the entire afternoon. Even the whole vibe within the shop feels heavenly today. Inside, the atmosphere feels so light and warm despite the intense cold weather going on outside. You are pleased to find your co-workers showing their smiles constantly as they tend to the customers, and there doesn’t seem to be a sight of unhappy patron sitting in your cafe everywhere you look.

If only you could share all the excitement instead of feeling like you are in a constant slump. It is something that you call as your ‘holiday mood’, where you find yourself constantly in a somber mood which doesn’t fade so easily even as the holiday season comes and goes.

It had been this way last year, and the year before, and you still have no idea just how much longer this feeling would last. Even the calming scent of baked goods and sweets that have brought all these people together to your cafe does nothing to you when it would have been your remedy against your sorrow. Today, however, they are not doing you any good, except for the fact that they simply make you feel like there is a part of you that is missing and the things that you normally treasure could no longer help elevate your mood.

and there we have it - sisscars… im crying…

A chuckle came from you as Jin laid himself down beside your bump on the bed, not expecting him to go anywhere else. The left side of your bump had well and truly become his home, finding himself often falling asleep for the night curled up right by your side.

Once Jin had made himself comfortable, he brought his hand across to rest it against the top of your baby bump, instinctively drawing patterns over it as he patiently waited for a bit of movement.

He would lay all night long to feel just a single kick from your baby, he never tired of feeling around, hoping that eventually he would be able to catch a little kick against the palm of my hand.

“How’s my favourite girl?” Jin asked, pressing a kiss to the side of your bump.

Straight away, you knew that he wasn’t talking to you. You had taken a backseat when it came to your daughter, with Jin doting on her more than anyone else. Of course, he cared about you, but the apple of his eye had definitely changed to someone a little bit smaller.

“Have you been trouble today?” He then asked your bump, knowing that he wasn’t going to get a response, tilting his head back instead so that he was able to look up at you.

Your head nodded in reply to him on your daughter’s behalf, “she’s been a right little wriggler today, kicking and fussing every time I’ve stood up to go and do anything.”

Jin’s eyes rolled as he tapped his hand gently over the top of your bump to let her know that she had done wrong. Although she had no idea what was going on, Jin still liked to involve her in absolutely everything, making sure to talk to her as much as he possibly could too.

“Do you need anything? You’re not in any pain, are you?” Jin asked, turning his attention to you, fretting as usual that something was up with you and that you weren’t letting on.

Your head quickly shook in response though, having taken the weight off of your feet after lying down in bed, your body felt alright. It was a part of pregnancy, and oddly, the discomfort was something that you were beginning to get used to.

“I think she must have known that you weren’t here today, that’s why she was wriggling, because she missed you.”

A quiet laugh came from Jin as his eyes looked back down to your bump again. “We’ve definitely got a daddy’s girl growing in that bump of yours Y/N, I can just feel it,” he told you, pressing a kiss against the side of it too.

“With how she’s been recently, I think I’ll have to agree.”

There always seemed to be a little more movement in your bump when Jin was talking which was your first clue that your daughter adored Jin. But more importantly, whenever he laid beside your bump and held onto it, she seemed to be calmer, almost as if she knew that Jin was there so that she could rest comfortably.

He took great pride in your baby bump, very protective whenever he was around. No one was allowed to touch your bump when Jin was around, his eyes would be on you at all times to make sure that no one pushed their luck either.

“Are you a daddy’s girl?” Jin asked, placing his hand around your bump, hoping to feel a kick, only for nothing to come in reply to him.

“Maybe she’s undecided yet,” you teased, reaching down to brush your hand over the top of his head, “you never know, she might be a mummy’s girl instead.”

Jin’s eyes rolled back across at you; he was pretty stubborn when he came to your daughter. More than anything he wanted a daddy’s girl; everyone knew that he wanted your daughter right by his side so that he could always take care of her.

The boys had teased him endlessly, something which you loved to be a spectator of. He hated whenever any of them talked to closely to your bump, not wanting your daughter to get confused between him and any of them.

“I can’t believe that she’ll be here in just a month now,” Jin whispered with a wide smile.

Every single day when you woke up, you got a reminder of how many days were left to your due date. Although you were getting nervous, Jin was only ever excited, those days couldn’t pass by soon enough for him for your daughter to arrive.

“Do you think she’ll know my voice when she comes?” Jin then asked you as his mind continued to wonder. “They always say don’t they that if you talk to a baby in a bump they’ll recognise voices, will they recognise mine?”

Your head nodded back at him, “I think you’ve probably talked out daughter’s ear off.”

A shy smile appeared on his face, “I’m just making sure that they feel involved and part of the family, we can’t leave our daughter out of all of the things that we’re doing, can we?”

“Of course not,” you chuckled, offering Jin a wide smile, “she might be sick of the sound of your voice though when she arrives, she listens to you constantly.”

Jin pushed gently against your side as you laughed back to him, noticing the look of disapproval that was on his face. He refused to allow anyone to knock him, even when that person was you, making sure that you knew that he was your daughter’s number one.

As much as you loved to tease Jin, you couldn’t hide the fact that you loved how much Jin spoke to your bump. Most nights you were able to glance down and watch him as he whispered to your bump and told them all about his day, making sure that he tried to remember as many of the details as possible.

“I’m not going to stop talking to the bump,” Jin told you, tracing his hand over the top of your bump still, “I won’t let her go for her to be able to avoid my voice.”

You knew that Jin meant every single word, your daughter was absolutely going to be his everything. He had booked the time off of work, cleared his schedule, and made plenty of time to at least spend a couple of weeks at home with you.

“Are you excited?” Jin smiled up at you.

“I am, are you?”

“Absolutely,” he smirked, not even having to think about an answer. “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life being a dad, but most importantly I can’t wait to do everything with you right by my side too.”

Your head nodded in agreement with him, “you know as much as I love to joke, there is no one else in the world that I would like to do this with other than you Jin.”

“I see your smile when I talk to the baby, I know you don’t mean it when you mess with me,” he joked back across to you.

Your hand brushed over his head once again, “that’s one lucky little lady in there being able to call you dad.”

“I just want to make sure that I do the best job for her,” he confided in you, “I don’t ever want to let her down.”

“You won’t,” you assured him, “you’ll be amazing, I can already tell.”

“I really hope so.”

You could hear the rain outside your window lashing against the glass violently, turning from soothing background noise to distraction as you poured over the stack of exams you had to mark for the weekend. Each essay was worse than the previous and you wondered why your professor even continued to hold a first year seminar in the first place. Fresh high school graduates did not have the maturity to deal with the theories that came with your field, most papers being the same ill informed analysis of BDSM that came from a distracted watching of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Grunting as another person talked about the nonexistent link between childhood sexual trauma and domming, you pulled out your airpods from your drawer, hoping to drown out the raindrops threatening to break your window with the soothing vocals of Taylor Swift. However, that proved to be an even bigger distraction, the catchy lyrics interrupting your reading and making you sing out loud instead.

That’s how Seokjin found you, singing along to a sad ballad, horribly off-tune in front of your laptop with a stack of papers around you. He couldn’t help but smile, his eyes turning into crescents as he tried to calm his heart. He didn’t know why everything you did was so cute lately but he wasn’t complaining. It seemed that throughout your friendship he had discounted all of your moments, moments when you were free and truly yourself. Now, it was became a game for him to sneak up on you when you were least expecting, only so he could relish those moments for a bit. It may be a little creepy but he didn’t think you’d mind, not when you turned to find him watching from the doorway and instead of being embarrassed or stopping, you just waved, continuing your awful runs.

He laughed, coming up to you and placing a kiss on top of your head, depositing the snacks he had dug up from your kitchen on the table. Clapping at his foresight, you reached for the bag of shrimp crackers, opening and taking a sniff, savoring the umami scent before popping a few in your mouth.

“I knew there was a reason I didn’t kick you out after sex,” you teased, between bites as he rolled his eyes. In all honesty, he wouldn’t have left even if you did kick you out, if only just to annoy you and not because lately he really couldn’t get enough of your presence. He had half a mind just to put you in his pocket and move you to his apartment.

“Why are you staring at me?” you mumbled, cheeks ballooned with crackers, and he just laughed, pulling you up by your wrist, an idea blooming in his head.

“Come on!” he called, dragging you through your apartment to the front door, your house slippers clacking loudly on the tiles as you tried to keep up with his speedy long legs. It was when he opened the door that your questions started. Questions that he ignored with a shush and a “Wait for it!” Soon enough, you were at the door of your apartment building the usual view of the street blurred behind the sheets of rain pouring from the skies.

“Seokjin it’s raining!” you exclaimed, digging your heels into the ground, ignoring as he begged you to just listen to him. You didn’t understand why he wanted to go out in the downpour all of a sudden, just the thought of wet clothes sticking to your body had you cringing. You were in your pajamas for fuck’s sake!

“Please! Just once,” he pleaded, bottom lip jutting out and eyes wide, a combination he knew made you weak. It had worked when he used it to convince you to sing a duet with him in the high school talent show. It had worked when he took you fishing just for you to be bored out of your mind for six whole hours. And it worked now.

“Fine. God, you’re so annoying!” you groaned, starting to walk again as Seokjin beamed, raising a fist in the air like he was in some coming of age movie. Rolling your eyes you followed him outside tentatively, the rain already starting to soak you both. Seokjin, on the other hand, seemed as if he didn’t even notice, walking casually down the sidewalk and around the building to the little park at the corner.

It was desolate, not a soul in sight, considering the terrible weather, and once again you were left wondering what mental breakdown your best friend was having to be standing grinning in the rain. He let your hand go when you reached the park, instead opening his arms and looking at the skies with a joyful laugh that made your own smile crack. He looked like a little kid about to jump in puddles behind his parents’ back. You almost felt bad breaking him out of his bubble.

“So you’re just here to frolick?” you smirked, crossing your arms as you looked him up and down. His shirt was plastered to his torso, revealing the spectacular body he often hid behind oversized clothes, and his legs glistened where they peaked from under his shorts. He kind of looked like a drowned rat with how his long hair was stuck to his face and you couldn’t help but laugh how ecstatic he looked despite his appearance.

“Nope,” he answered smugly, pulling you to him till you were chest to chest. “I’m here to kiss you!”

He giggled at the confusion on your face as he cupped your face, fruitlessly trying to move the raindrops scattered across it with his thumbs. Even with the slight chill of the rain, a warmth bloomed in his chest as he stared at you, your eyelashes flicking away the little drops of rain as you blinked up at him.

“I’ve always wanted to kiss in the rain,” he whispered, eyes glued to your lips as he waited for another snarky comment from you. When none came, he leaned down pressing his lips against yours slowly, savoring how the taste of rain mixed with yours, sending his senses fuzzy till he was melting into you.

Seokjin and you didn’t kiss too often yet lately it seemed that the two of you used any excuse to have your lips on each other. Hello kisses, goodbye kisses, good luck on your test kisses, hey that’s a cute cat video kisses, and now rain kisses. The reasoning kept getting flimsier and you knew that you should probably stop. Friends with benefits didn’t kiss, but the reasoning was lost on you when Seokjin’s kisses set your whole body aflame.

Winding your arms around his neck, you stepped on your toes to deepen the kiss, enjoying how he smiled at the gesture, his own arms circling your waist and lifting you up. It was effervescent, the sudden giddiness he felt just from kissing you and he couldn’t help but laugh, his forehead against yours as he twirled you around like he was the lead in a cheesy romcom. You told him as such and it only resulted in his laugh getting louder till he was putting you down, kissing you once again between giggles.

“Thanks for helping me get my wish,” he snickered, his hand in yours as he led the two of you back to your building.

You shrugged, oddly less stressed than you had been earlier, the little break helping you look past the infuriating pages of assignments you still had to go through. “That’s what friends are for.”

He rolled his eyes, sticking his tongue out at you as he entered the code to your building, the two of you trailing water behind you. He felt you shiver at the blasting airconditioner in the hallway, opting to wrap his body around your back as he waddled you both to your front door, making you laugh at the absurdity that his equally soaked body would warm you up.

“Shower?” he asked when the two of you were back in your apartment.

“You did all of this for shower sex, didn’t you?” you deadpanned, eyes narrowed at him but he just rolled his eyes again at you before bending at the waist and lifting you over his shoulder making you squeal in surprise.

“Let’s go, little brat!” he exclaimed, smacking your ass once and carrying you to the bathroom.

Perhaps friends with benefits were supposed to have rules, but if this is what it was like without any rules, you were euphoric without them.
