Review of Silencio(2018), starring John Noble, Rupert Graves and Melinda Matthews; directed and written by Lorena Villareal
No important spoilers in this review (because they are significant); it’s too early and I would really like Rupert fans to take the time to find where this is showing and take in the characterization and plot development. “Inspired by true events” is based on the supernatural phenomena witnessed in the “Zona de Silencio” in Mexico, where electronics don’t work and electromagnetic incidences confound geologists for the past 80 some odd years.
That kind of mythological backstory is ripe for Villareal to come up with a sci-fi thriller that brews a slow mix of family, science, curiosity and loyalty. I realized that reviews for this film are largely negative but I think it’s because a large majority of reviewers are jaded by what they’ve seen and expect something different. Not better; just different.
Grandfather James (Noble) is the patriarch and he adopts the placement well - even as he is obviously of British decent but spends the rest of his life in Mexico. That’s a profound connection and choice. His granddaughter Ana (Matthews) is unaware of the sacrifice he’s made to make sure she is safe and even then? It’s so random an event.
Where does Rupert’s character of Peter Larke fit into all of this? If you are familiar with Mr. Graves’ work, you’ll know that he is drawn to characters who don’t reveal their selves quite so easily. He’s a mysterious interloper in this one and it’s intriguing. I tend to think he gets cast in these kind of thrillers because he’s talented and smart. He obviously knows what he’s doing and he wouldn’t take on anything that wasn’t interesting. And all I’ll say to the end is that this was veryinteresting.
