Josef Albers emigrated from Nazi Germany to the United States and was hugely influential in bringing Bauhaus-informed minimalism to American art students.

Color, Albers thought, was “the most relative medium in art.” Interested in philosophies of optics, neuroscience, and perception, Albers radically simplified his compositions, often using a square format, to experiment with the saturation of color. This lithograph aims to capture the velvety, rich black of a night sky, meditating on the variety of shades perceptible within this hue.

On view through December 23, 2016 in the exhibition Time Well Spent: Art and Temporality.

More color experiments. Melted edge and transparency.

Some small color exercises. Beginning to look at Josef Albers’ color theories.
