I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to create these costumes based on Baroque, Renaissance, or Victorian fashion so I’m going to try them all using that dress from TCP as a sample.

Cardan starts with “She’s my wife…” and not that she’s the High Queen, he cares more that she’s his than the fact that she holds just as much power as him. He started with the fact that if anyone touches her they’ll answer to him not only as High King but as Jude’s husband.

no no bc u don’t understand…..it’s been years and i’m still a wreck like i could go on about how the ending of tqon subverts tropes in popular ya novels and how it was even more successful bc of it..anyway i love this art and it’s bringing back the feels
Jude Duarte and Cardan Greenbriar as I imagine them: Jude is focused and a little cross; Cardan is watching her carefully and trying to look like he’s not
I’m experimenting with skipping the watercolour step and going full digital colour. The pro: it’s faster. The con: you don’t get quite the same organic texture. I kept the restrained colour palette that I generally prefer, and tried to get at least some texture from the pencil crayon and the paper itself. It’s a different look, but it’s growing on me! Next time I might try adding more pencil texture to the background.

Here it is! Part 1 of a new parody series of illustrations themed as Jude in Wonderland! Ever since book 1 of The Folk of the Air, I had always loved the symbolism of Cardan considering Jude the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ of Elfhame.
I thought it would be fun to re-imagine these characters in the roles of the classic tale, but with a TFOTA twist. This first illustration has Alice!Jude meeting Cheshire!Cardan. And yes, Cardan has cat ears! I thought these two paired nicely with this iconic exchange:
… said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” “How do you know I’m mad?“ said Alice. “You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”
I’ve mentioned before how I found Cardan so closely aligned with Cheshire - clever with his words, no alliances, disappears with a grin. This exchange just solidified it for me.
I went HAM on this environment here, which I normally don’t enjoy doing. But by combining it with some Gustav Klimt-inspired textures, I had a little bit more passion fueling my pursuit at creating a Wonderland / Elfhame landscape. I have two more of these illustration planned with this parody crossover; so stay tuned!
