sometimes I think about wally west’s arc in season two of the flash and how the show had the potential to create one of the most compelling superhero duos on cable television and instead…didn’t. just decided not to. just up and emptied wally’s potential entirely, all to save the meager lackluster storylines of other characters who’ve never been up to the task, no matter how top billed you are caitlin.

seriously. the racism of the storyline about iris and wally’s mother being heavily present is enough to contend with, and then you add how the show just turned wally’s trauma into a huge joke for so many others, with the stupid “my only parent is dying so you shouldn’t date me” joke they used in season three and then just have zero plans for how to mesh wally’s character in with the group in season four despite being wally fucking west. hello?? and for what? to preserve storylines and screen time for “team flash”?? wally is the heart of the speed force, canonically. there would be no “team flash” without wally west. there would be no speed force!

I need to not rant about this anymore for my own blood pressure, but I just really can’t believe how good the potential was for wally on this show. his dynamic with iris and joe was so, so good. butting heads with barry but desperately wanting to impress him all the time was just perfection. and all this throwaway lines that were hidden gems! that he fell in love with cars because going on drives with his mother was his favorite memory growing up! how he connects being on the road, or being on the move – running itself – to loving his mother, just like how barry’s love for iris is his lightning rod. how devastated and guilty he is for costing the flash his speed, and, instead of wallowing in it the way other characters on this show do and have done for eight seasons of their own pity parties, goes out and does what he can to help people, because if there’s one thing you can count on wally west to do it’s to self-sacrifice. how he struggles with his ego and pride but also has the biggest fucking heart of any kid you’ve ever seen.

and then that throwaway line from barry about bludhaven later on in the series and wally not getting to casually mention dropping by to hang with one of his friends there???????????????? WHAT ARE YOU DOING FLASH WRITERS THEY LET BATWOMAN CAST BRUCE WAYNE SURELY YOU CAN SAY THE NAME DICK GRAYSON FOR FUCK’S SAKE LET THEM BE MORE THANFRIENDS

sorry I’m in a I Love Wally West mood and I think I might have to read a fic or two to drown my feelings for a bit so if there are any recs y'all have for cw the flash’s wally west let me know (I love all versions of wally but this rant is about this version specifically so I’m in the need for fics about him specfically)
