anyways skyla did not die due to a broken heart because she was in captivity, stop that

Blackfish was accurate in some places and unaccurate in others. But the main point stays the same: whether they were born in captivity, rescued from a show, or taken from the wild they need to be cared for properly, with enrichment, sociality, and specialized healthcare.

Remember how orcas have that long dorsal fin? That fin weakens and bends in captivity, as seen at SeaWorld and in Free Willy. Orcas with that bent dorsal fin will die if released into the wild.

That fin helps them swim, turn, and guide themselves. When it is bent they cannot complete basic tasks such as hunting or evading predation/humans.

Remember that tiktok about the high school girl who bought a goldfish from the store and released it into the ocean? Regardless of good intentions, get informed first. Don’t cause more harm.

Your first paragraph was correct. But about dorsal collapse… Not quite.

Port and Starboard are two wild orcas with collapsed fins, but they’re hunting and surviving just fine. What caused their collapse is unknown, but it’s not a death sentence. They can be a sign of poor health, as K21 Cappuccino was seen with a collapsed fin shortly before his death, but they can’t be reliably used as health indicators.

Roughly 1% of males have collapsed dorsal fins, and no females recorded in the wild have collapsed dorsal fins. It impacts the way they swim and turn, which can impact their safety.

While outliers exist, marine biologists have been saying for years to not release those with collapsed dorsal fins back into the wild because it hinders their survivability, their chance at mating, and even the odds of being selected by a pod.

I’d love to see some sources on that, if you don’t mind. I’ve heard experts say orcas should not be released due to health problems, like broken and drilled teeth. Never have I heard dorsal collapse to be the primary issue. That would imply animals like Corky (who does not have any bend in her tall fin) are viable candidates for release, when in reality her health problems would likely kill her.

Wild orcas with collapsed dorsals get by just fine in the wild as far as I’ve read, seen, and heard. I‘d also like to see those sources.

Can SeaWorld Really Send Our Killer Whales to China? Will They?

By: candace_calloway_whiting

“Ocean Kingdom is the first phase of transforming the last of the undeveloped Pearl River Delta islands into what Mr. Su describes as the “Orlando of China” which “will become the new benchmark for the theme park industry.”  The Chimelong Group.

The short answer is yes, they can send the orcas to a foreign country. It is a viable option, and there are no regulations…

It’s here everybody! Andrew Foote got in contact after seeing our attempt at a Northern Isles catalo

It’s here everybody! Andrew Foote got in contact after seeing our attempt at a Northern Isles catalogue and kindly gave us the file we have been so excited to see for many years!

It’s the full Northern Isles ID Chart! From 012 to 139 !
(includes west coast community as well)

No more ‘No Image Available’ ! We have permission to share it and you can view it viathis link. It is getting an update soon but for now it is rather exciting to look at the ID Chart and see if you can match any previous unidentified orca from photographs and also look at the newly released Icelandic Catalogue as well and see if you can find any new matches or ID’s for current matches!

Enjoy guys, we are!

Orcas are some of the most effective predators in the ocean, and each population of them have developed unique hunting techniques that definitely earn them the “killer whale” title.

I think I’ll do a set.

1 of my favourite songs of the year so far.

Lolita (Tokitae) needs our help. She’s needed our help for decades, but time is running out. 50+ years in a small concrete tank and she’s currently battling pneumonia. Please read Lolita’s story and check out Origami Whales Project for ways we can help.

Lolita (Tokitae) is running out of time as her health deteriorates due to currently battling pneumonia. She has spent 50+ years in a small concrete tank. So, how can we help? Origami Whales Project (founded by Peggy Oki) has provided ways we can TAKE ACTION (letters, petition, etc). Please read Lolita’s story and the plans that have been thoroughly researched to help her live in the Salish Sea once again. I’m titling this painting “Reunion” in hopes of helping manifest that reality. Thank you for spreading the word and doing what you can.

In addition, I know this list is small, but please understand that it is extraordinarily difficult to find orca-specific articles from a pro-captivity point of view that actually focus on orcas alone. If you know of any more articles, please message me and I will gladly include them on this list.)
