Today marks the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. November 9, 1938 marked an outpouring of violence against Jews in Nazi Germany. To memorialize the event, artists Doug and Mike Starn framed a page excerpted from Anne Frank’s Diary. The work acknowledges historical events, and the Diary as a textual witness to the encroaching Holocaust.

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, screenwriter, novelist, and essayist Arthur Miller, best known for plays such as The CrucibleandDeath of a Salesman and films such as The Misfits, had a writing career that spanned seven decades and left a lasting impression on American theater and public consciousness. This amazing dramatist was Jewish, and here’s how we know:

-Arthur Miller was born to a family of Austrian Jewish descent in New York, New York. [x]

-Prior to his marriage to Marilyn Monroe, the Hollywood star reportedly converted to Judaism to establish a deeper connection to Arthur and his parents. The pair had a Jewish wedding ceremony after having a civil ceremony. [x]

-Many of Arthur Miller’s literary works deal with Jewish themes, and some of these works, including Broken Glass, do so explicitly. The name of this work is a reference to Kristallnacht (the Night of Broken Glass), a major event often cited as the beginning of the Holocaust in full force. Thousands of synagogues, Jewish businesses, homes, and schools were burned or ransacked, and hundreds of Jews were killed and thousands more were transported to concentration camps. [x]

Fascinating new exhibition @hdgoe, featuring objects damaged during the November Pogrom (“Kristallnacht”) that were recently rediscovered in a cellar of an Orthodox Jewish school in Vienna’s 2nd district #Leopoldstadt, on #Malzgasse. The building housed a school, a synagogue and the world’s oldest Jewish Museum prior to the catastrophic events of 1938. After the Pogrom and during the war, the building became a Jewish old people’s home and a place where Jews who had been evicted from their homes lived in cramped conditions prior to their deportations to ghettos and extermination camps. It is now a school once more. The exhibited objects include the everyday objects such as equipment from science lessons, leather shoes, crockery, but also artefacts from the museum, including art and ritual objects and gravestone fragments.

NICHT MEHR VERSCHÜTTET (Buried No Longer), temporary exhibition, on until 19th April 2020 at Haus der Geschichte Österreich.
