A request of Malon dealing with some lactose intolerance and a milk binge. Yeah, I understand how ironic it must be for a cowgirl to get crazy gassy with a little milk, but she’s the kind who likes to indulge in it occaisionally, seeing as she’s mostly alone by herself most days.

Thousands of cartons of Vanilla Almond Breeze are under recall for containing undeclared milk. I don’t care what you think about vegans, nondairy milk, whatever…

This could kill people if word doesn’t get out fast enough.

Here’s a link to the recall.

It covers a lot of states:  Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin

Please share this. Dairy allergies can be fatal and many people with them choose to drink almond milk.

recall is dated august 2, this is current. pass it along for your lactose intolerant friendos.

So I drink like 3 glasses of milk a day, I love cream and I love icecream, but sadly, I am developing lactose intolerance. Naturally, I googled it.

The technical term for lactose intolerance is hypolactasia. So we know that when we eat food, it travels through our oesophagus, stomach and intenstines. The enzymes found in the stomach and the intestine (e.g. amylase) break down different molecules so that they are smaller and are able to be absorbed through the intenstinal wall. Well a specific enzyme known as lactase, catalyses the reaction for the break down of lactose which is found in dairy. Lactose is a dissacharide sugar (relatively small). The breakdown is a hydrolisis reaction and results in galactose.

In mammals, infants usually produce lactase untill they are weaned from their mothers, however due to extended consumption of dairy, over time the human population has developed lactose persistence, meaning it is continued to be produced after weaning. Despite this, approximately 75% of adults show a decrease in lactase at some point.

Cultures that have favoured dairy for hundreds of years are more likely to have individuals who are lactase persistent (e.g. european countries).

There are multiple independant mutations which allow lactase persistence (different mutations are found in different cultures).

What is going on when pregnant women drink milk and have diarrhea?

Some pregnant mothers have diarrhea after drinkingmilk. What is going on? There are several reasons for drinking milk and diarrhea, and different reasons should be treated differently.

1. People with lactose intolerance (90% of Chinese have lactose intolerance): Patients with lactose intolerance should control the amount of milk when taking milk. Generally, it is no problem within 200ml, but some individuals can only drink it. Very little milk or even no milk at all, otherwise it will cause bloating and diarrhea.

2. Eating cold milk: Because cold milk will affect gastrointestinal motility and cause mild diarrhea, most of the nutrients in milk cannot be absorbed by the body. It should be avoided to drink cold milk taken from the refrigerator or cellar, especially for patients with colds.

3. Allergic to milk: Some people are allergic to milk, and have gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea after drinking, as well as respiratory symptoms such as rhinitis, asthma, or urticaria. They should avoid drinking milk.

4. Eating oranges just after drinking milk: Eating oranges just after drinking milk will affect digestion and absorption, but also cause abdominal distension, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

5. Avoid drinking milk with chocolate: Because the calcium in milk combines with the oxalic acid in chocolate to form calcium oxalate, it can cause dry hair, diarrhea, calcium deficiency and slow growth.
