Mermay 2022: Biology Influenced Merfolk
Hey there folks! If you’ve been following my twitter and instagram, for this Mermay, my theme is to basically take inspiration from real life biology, and apply them to their design as merfolk… especially their wicked set of chompers. It got so popular on Insta, I even made backstories for their designs there xD.
You can read up more about their stories on my Insta, but the gist is this:Karais a Great White Shark mermaid, and she does her best to look out for her sister, a Lamprey. She lives in a town full of quirky characters, whose merfolk come from multiple kinds of fish and critters of the sea.
The lamprey has no jaws, but the lamprey needs no jaws. It uses this sucker to latch on to the bodies of other fish, rasp away at their flesh, and drink their blood.
So why then would you allow someone to do this to you?

I think this is the last of the mermays I haven’t posted here, and it’s one of my personal favourites too. Not only because I love lampreys.
I decided a long time ago that these are Lily’s fish, because they’re a bit “off”. Early in her design process, her concept was a something like a “creepy pasta hunter” focused on retro technology. It’s a rough description and I toned it down to eerie rather than batshit, but she’s designed to live in a world where some things just aren’t right and she can find them.
Classic lamprey, I guess.

Jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) andlampreys (Petromyzon marinus) are some of the most energy-efficient travellers on Earth, but why this is has remained an unsolved mystery - until now. Exciting new research from the University of Florida’s Department of Integrative Biology has finally revealed the magic in their movement: instead of pushing against water like most other animals, they propel themselves forwards by using suction to pull the water towards them. Whereas pushing forward requires the creation of high pressure in the surrounding water, suction makes the most of low-pressure areas of water close to the animal’s body, so that they need considerably less energy to get moving.
