I designed these lamps as my entry for a design contest.

It’s been a long while since I posted anything, but I am still working on new dice designs. In the meantime though, I have participated in the Trotec Design Awards 2019 competition with this design for two laser cut lampshades.
I designed them to fit a basic lamp base and lamp cord from IKEA with the idea that these are available almost everywhere. They are made from lacquered birch triplex and can be assembled without tools or glue. The five-fold symmetrical flower shape is the result of the challenge I set myself to create an organic shape that does not immediately look like is was made from only flat pieces, and avoids using mostly 90 degree angles.

The competition is still in progress. If you’d like to help me try to win something, you can cast your vote through this form here. My entry is called “Lotus” Lampenkappen.

“Cosmo” electric guitar by Verso Musical Instruments,

With an ethos that combines his experience building Weissenborn instruments, and the influence of German industrial design icon Dieter Rams, Robin Stummvoll’s Verso guitars are a very different proposition with Cosmo, an utterly simplified, minimalist design, handcrafted with a body made of bent steel.

The Magnet Mount Pickups use neodymium magnets and were especially designed and manufactured for Cosmo. They stick to the metal body and can be moved around, allowing you to experiment with sound.

The laser cutting and powder coating of the sheet metal is done by local craftsmen; the wood used is grown in Germany.

Greg Universe’s guitar!! We were actually originally commissioned to design this piece, and we’re super happy with it. It’s got so many neat little details (and lots of little pieces to glue together) - from the frets having a bit of 3Dness to them, to the hand-painted stars and moon. It hangs differently from our usual Steven Universe necklaces too, just had to hang it like a real guitar!

(And for anyone curious about Spinel… she’s already in the works and the gems are on their way to us ;3)

Possibly the biggest project I’ve ever worked on! This is a massive map of World of Warcraft as of Cataclysm (with a couple extra details). The whole thing was drawn on the computer with a little help from filters, and a lot of hours of drawing. It’s engraved on leather, hand stitched together, and mounted on wood planks.

I had to adjust the scale and relative position of the continents so I could make them large enough to see all the details and to avoid a huge empty ocean. This was a commission for a client, but I really want to make one with Pandaria included, I think that’d fill it out really nicely!

This was a huge amount of working hours to complete. I’m working on a making-of video for it. I’m also starting up a Patreon to support future videos and other things I want to move on to doing! Search me up on Patreon as Nappinkraken if you want to support me.

Exquisitely Cut Paper Sculptures by Rogan Brown Highlight the Effects of Coral Bleaching

Through new paper sculptures comprised of delicately fringed sea creatures, Brown (previously) creates a striking visual display of the disastrous impacts of the climate crisis on marine life, showing how issues like coral bleaching can radiate outward into the wider world.

In “Ghost Coral,” two circular reliefs comprised of intricate paper cuttings splay outward, layering the fragile lifeforms sliced from stark, white paper. These monochromatic pieces contrast their vibrant counterparts, which are nestled into the protective center of one of the masses. The other work, titled “Coral Garden,” is Brown’s interpretation of the heat-resistant organisms that scientists grow and plant in deteriorating patches for rejuvenation, and he places bright, healthy creatures, which are enclosed in transparent bubbles, within swaths of spindly, pale creatures. To create both pieces, Brown follows the same meticulous process, which involves drawing the organisms, cutting them out with a laser, and carefully hand-painting and mounting them into their final, sprawling forms.
