For #LatinxHeritageMonth, we’re thrilled to highlight Dr. Ana María Porras Corredor (@AnaMaPorras), an assistant professor at @UFBME, @ifthenshecan ambassador, and fierce advocate for #InclusiveSciComm!

Originally from Colombia, Dr. Porras Corredor came to the US to follow a dream of being a biomedical engineer. After obtaining a BS, MS, & PhD in the field, her lab now focuses on using engineering to study how microbes cause diseases in humans.

She also actively works to share the benefits of microbes through her crocheted #sciart in English and Spanish online (@anaerobias ), through her teaching as a professor at @UFBME and through her outreach with Clubes de ciencia (@CdeC_col).

Dr. Porras Corredor is such a fierce advocate for multicultural/lingual communication that in addition to co-founding @LatinxInBME, the first @storycollider event hosted all in spanish was thanks to her efforts as an #IfThen ambassador. Thanks for all you do Dr. Porras Corredor!

To close out #latinxheritagemonth #JKXComics is excited to share our comic on the impactful work of Dr. Mario Molina whose research showed how common chemicals we use every day can deplete the ozone.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) was widely used in refrigerants and aerosols due to its low toxicity and reactivity. Dr. Molina determined that CFCs accumulated in the atmosphere can interact with ultraviolet rays making it reactive and destructive to the ozone (See Comic!).

Dr. Molina’s research highlighted the impact of CFCs on our environment and led to the formation of the Montreal Protocol to limit the use of CFCs. Dr. Molina received the Nobel Peace Prize in Chemistry and the Presidential Medal for his extraordinary scientific findings.

Unfortunately, Dr. Molina passed on October 7th, 2020 and will be sorely missed but his legacy will live on as a scientist whose research transformed how everyday activities impact climate change and his work pushed for policy changes to make our world a better place to live. Thank you Dr. Molina!

JKX Comics honors the remarkable work of Dr. César Milstein for his contribution to immunology and his discovery of hybridomas which awarded him the Nobel Prize. This discovery revolutionized the field of biology and medicine.

Dr. Milstein discovered that fusing spleen cells with myeloma cells (immortal cancer plasma cells) form hybridomas; which increases the longevity of the cells and maintains its ability to produce antibodies (proteins that recognize and bind foreign proteins).

With this discovery, genetically identical hybridomas can be made which produce antibodies that recognize a specific part of a protein. These antibodies are termed monoclonal antibodies.

Monoclonal antibodies are a common tool in biology to detect proteins. They are used to detect whether a patient has a specific disease and as a treatment for diseases like cancer. These therapies can be recognized with the “mab” at the end of the name.

Thank you, Dr. Milstein, for your transformative work! You can read more of Dr. Milstein and his work here:

Happy Tuesday everyone! To kick off our #LatinxHeritageMonth, let’s celebrate the work of Dr. Maritza Soto Vasquez, a Chilean astronomer who discovered the exoplanets that are just outside the Virgo constellation. ♍️

Exoplanets are planets outside of our solar system that orbit stars the same way the Earth orbits the Sun. However, they are incredibly hard to see because of the brightness of the star they orbit.✨

That’s what makes Dr. Soto Vasquez work so remarkable – she confirmed the existence of not one but THREE exoplanets; all of which are larger than Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system.

Many thanks to @cris_uribe4 for translating this post!
_____________

Kathrin Barboza Márquez is a Bolivian researcher who studies the bio-acoustics of bats. She is best known for rediscovering (with her research partner) the Bolivian sword-nosed bat, that was thought to be extinct for 72 years!

Kathrin has made substantial contributions to #STEM studying bats in many countries across Latin America. She made one of the first libraries of bat echolocation sounds in Bolivia, as well as the first comprehensive study on bat parasites.

Kathrin’s impressive research has earned her @natgeo Young Explorer Grant in 2006, the L’Oreal-UNESCO #WomenInScience award in 2012 (where she is the first Bolivian awarded), as well as being named top ten Latin American women in science in 2013 by the BBC.

JKX Comics is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! Today we honor the outstanding work of Dr. Sandra M. Díaz, an ecologist from Argentina who is changing how we view biodiversity (the variety of wildlife, plants, and other lifeforms in a particular ecosystem).

Dr. Díaz’s work consisted of understanding how CO2 levels impact particular plants by examining the effects on the microorganisms within the soil. Her results provided insight on how soil organisms compete with plants for available nutrients and the impact on plant growth. This type of analysis provided a more global view on the impact of CO2 on our ecosystem which would be difficult to study by only examining the individual plant.

Dr. Díaz work is widely recognized in the ecology field and she is one of the most cited environmental scientists. She is the leader of @ipbes_ , an intergovernmental organization who assess the state of biodiversity in order to improve policy. Thank you Dr. Díaz for your amazing work and your efforts to improve the world around us.
