Valerie L. Thomas is a physicist and inventor, best known for her creation of the illusion transmitter, for which she holds the patent, while working for NASA in the 1970s-80s.

This technology uses two concave mirrors to create 3D optical illusion images, which has been adapted for use in surgery imaging as well as the television and film industry.

During her 30-year career at NASA Valerie Thomas oversaw multiple innovative projects, including the creation of the Landsat program, the longest-running enterprise to obtain satellite imagery of Earth.

Her expertise and creative thinking have advanced our understanding of the universe and influenced the construction of imaging technology that remains impactful to this day.

Dr. Minnie Joycelyn Elders is an army veteran, pediatric endocrinologist, and public health administrator who was appointed the first African American Surgeon General of the United States by Bill Clinton in 1993.

Her outspoken views on female reproductive rights and science-based sex education in high schools made her a controversial public figure, prompting massive backlash from conservative parties of the time.

After her resignation as Surgeon General in 1994, Elders returned to her former position as professor of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where she is currently a professor emeritus and remains active in public health education.

You can learn more about Dr. Elders in her 1996 autobiography, Joycelyn Elders, M.D.: From Sharecropper’s Daughter to Surgeon General of the United States of America.

To close out #PrideMonth, we’re celebrating the work of Dr. Alan Hart: physician, radiologist, scientist, and writer. Dr. Hart is one of the first individuals to undergo a female to male transition, pioneering in every facet of his life.

After obtaining his medical degree @OHSU in 1917, Dr. Hart decided to undergo hormone therapy for female to male transition. While this change was one of the happiest choices he made, he faced difficulties in maintaining a job due to his transition.

Dr. Hart continued to pursue medicine and focused on tackling one of the deadliest diseases at the time, tuberculosis (TB). Dr. Hart became interested in using X-rays as a way to detect TB and created TB screening clinics which helped detect and treat patients.

To address the growing spread of TB, Dr. Hart wrote medical articles on TB detection. He also promoted awareness of TB through #scicomm pop press articles targeting the public. Thank you Dr. Hart for your dedication and remarkable work!

Have you even had a seaweed cake? Dr. Isabella (“Izzy”) Aiona Abbott, a renowned algae marine biologist and first Native Hawaiian to receive a PhD in science, wrote a book with a recipe for such a cake to better connect Hawaiian flora and culture.

As a child, her mother taught about the edible Hawaiian seaweeds and instilled in her a love for plants that’s shown through her education, as she earned her bachelors (1941), master’s (1942), and PhD (1950) degrees all in botany.

After being hired as a Biology lecturer at Stanford University in 1960, she had the chance to show her exceptional teaching and research prowess. So much so, that the school promoted her to full professor in 1972 despite not being hired for a tenure-track position.

Authoring 8 books and over 150 publications, Dr. Izzy Abbot was considered the authority of algae of the Pacific Ocean. Her love for botany and her culture was so great, that even after retiring in 1982, she continued to work in ethnobotany at the University of Hawaii.

To close out #latinxheritagemonth #JKXComics is excited to share our comic on the impactful work of Dr. Mario Molina whose research showed how common chemicals we use every day can deplete the ozone.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) was widely used in refrigerants and aerosols due to its low toxicity and reactivity. Dr. Molina determined that CFCs accumulated in the atmosphere can interact with ultraviolet rays making it reactive and destructive to the ozone (See Comic!).

Dr. Molina’s research highlighted the impact of CFCs on our environment and led to the formation of the Montreal Protocol to limit the use of CFCs. Dr. Molina received the Nobel Peace Prize in Chemistry and the Presidential Medal for his extraordinary scientific findings.

Unfortunately, Dr. Molina passed on October 7th, 2020 and will be sorely missed but his legacy will live on as a scientist whose research transformed how everyday activities impact climate change and his work pushed for policy changes to make our world a better place to live. Thank you Dr. Molina!

Kathrin Barboza Márquez is a Bolivian researcher who studies the bio-acoustics of bats. She is best known for rediscovering (with her research partner) the Bolivian sword-nosed bat, that was thought to be extinct for 72 years!

Kathrin has made substantial contributions to #STEM studying bats in many countries across Latin America. She made one of the first libraries of bat echolocation sounds in Bolivia, as well as the first comprehensive study on bat parasites.

Kathrin’s impressive research has earned her @natgeo Young Explorer Grant in 2006, the L’Oreal-UNESCO #WomenInScience award in 2012 (where she is the first Bolivian awarded), as well as being named top ten Latin American women in science in 2013 by the BBC.

Meet Dr. Fe Villanueva del Mundo, a well-renowned Filipina pediatrician who started the first pediatric clinic in the Philippines.
.
After graduating as valedictorian from the University of the Philippines with her medical degree in 1926, Dr. del Mundo was offered an amazing opportunity. President Manuel Quezon offered to pay for her studies in any field at any institution in the United States.
.
Not missing the chance, Dr. del Mundo furthered her education at the Children’s Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School where she completed her fellowship in 1939 as well as earning a master’s degree in Bacteriology at Boston University’s School of Medicine in 1940.
.
She returned to the Philippines in 1941, just before the Japanese invasion. As battles erupted, del Mundo cared for children as part of the international Red Cross and also helped form a makeshift hospice inside an internment camp.
.
Outside of establishing a children’s hospital in 1943 (after the Japanese disbanded the hospice), Dr. del Mundo is also known for her research on infectious diseases (such as dengue virus) and how they affect children.
.
And if that isn’t impressive enough, del Mundo is also known for creating an incubator out of bamboo that could be used in areas without electricity.
.
As such, Dr. Del Mundo has been given numerous awards for her service to mankind and it is our honor to pay tribute to this phenomenal woman.

Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-born film actress and inventor, recognized for both her on-screen talent

Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-born film actress and inventor, recognized for both her on-screen talent as well as her pioneering contributions to radio communication technology.

She acted in over 30 movies in Europe and America, spanning the 1930s-50s, during which she was internationally praised for her beauty. Her iconic look is said to have influenced the original comic depictions of Disney’s Snow White as well as Batman’s Catwoman.

During World War II, Lamarr and co-inventor George Anthiel developed a “frequency hopping spread spectrum” technology that manipulated radio frequencies at irregular intervals between transmission and reception, for which they received a patent in 1942. This invention formed a code that would protect classified messages from being intercepted by enemy intelligence, which was later implemented in Naval ships in the 1960s.

Lamarr and Antheil received several awards for their invention, including the Invention Convention’s BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award, known as the “Oscars of Inventing,” for which she was the first woman recipient. In 2014, she was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for her pioneering work.

You can learn more about this amazing woman in the PBS documentary “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr story.”
