• • • Hangyul hates talking about himself. Maybe it’s because he’s had to introduce himself in front of the class so many times (he lost count), and each time, he says the same thing. “Hi, I’m Hangyul Lee. I’m from South Korea. I moved here because of my dad’s job. Nice to meet you.” And there’s always that lingering urge to say “I won’t be here long. I never stay for more than a few months”. He’s used to it, of course; he even has the speech memorized. He could probably recite it in his sleep, but this is different, because he’s here for good now. And he’s not announcing his life story for a class of 30-or-so judgemental kids. It’s just Hangyul and the camera. Not that that’s any better. “Hi. I’m Lee Hangyul. I like physics and I like to rap.” He bows, finished with the introduction already. He thinks it went pretty well.

▸ ▸ ▸ WHY AM I HERE.

• • • What does he want to do? What does he want to do? WHAT does he want to DO? Hangyul keeps repeating the question in his head, turning it over and over as he would a stress ball, squeezing the stuffing out of it. Since he was younger, he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a scientist. It’s what he’s good at, what he’s worked hard at for years and years. So then, why is he here for an audition? Has his goal changed, without him knowing? Or is he just here to satisfy some type of curiosity? Hangyul doesn’t know. He smiles sheepishly. “It’s a secret.” From you and from me, he thinks.
