This is a warning post
I just want to say this in case a younger or newly discovered system sees this:
You don’t owe anyone your triggers. At all. Doesn’t matter if it’s a trauma trigger or an alter’s positive trigger. No one is ever entitled to them. And no one is owed an explanation of them.
We’ve been open about being a system for almost a year now, and still, we have barely shared any triggers. Our primary protector drew a clear line from the start that she would not share her positive triggers. Our primary gatekeeper gave our partner/close friends ONE positive trigger, only to be used in an emergency, and only for our own safety. Our partner is the only one who knows ANY negative triggers, and we ONLY gave those up for safety (there are certain parts of our body that will trigger panic when touched so our partner knows where they are purely just to avoid them).
Our partner actually stated to us that they didn’t feel like they needed any of our triggers, because that was not their business, and we agree. Our gatekeeper has said that if this ends up being a life-long partnership then he’ll consider sharing more, but if we spend that much time with them anyway, they’re more likely to find out by witnessing them, because we feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable around them.
No one is entitled to your triggers, ever, no matter their relationship to you, but *especially* if they’re not already close enough to you that you can be safely vulnerable around them.
I highlight this because an ex-friend once tried to argue with us when it was appropriate for us to experience trauma triggers, which is a disgusting thing to do, and a huge red flag. This same person went on to demand a list of triggers from another system that we’re friends with. But no one, and I mean no one, is ever entitled to any of your triggers, no matter what. Some things are safer when they stay inside the system.
Stay safe out there systems
Edit to add: this post essentially boils down to the simple message ‘you’re not entitled to my triggers, especially if I can’t be safely vulnerable around you’, which is a really basic boundary. If someone’s first instinct upon you setting this boundary is to argue with it, that’s a bit of a red flag.
