My Love Letter To An App…
It All Started A Little Over 2 Years Ago When I First Got Into Mobile Photography, And Was Fascinated By What Phones Could Do In This Day And Age. A Photo Editing App Called VSCO Came Into My Life. In Recent Time, I Have Had No Further Need For The App. A Sad Thing To Admit, But The Truth Nonetheless.
A While Back, A Good Friend Of Mine, Dondre Green, Had One Of The Best Instagram Feeds I Had Seen At The Time. His Attention To Scale, Composition, And Tones Were Unmatched. I Often Found Myself Asking ‘Is This With Your Phone?’ I Was Much Younger Then Mentally. So Naïve. He Then Told Me About VSCO, A Photo Editing App That He Used On Most Of His Posts To Get The Right Pop Of Color And Set The Mood.
I Searched Far And Wide In The Android Market Place To No Avail. It Was An iPhone Exclusive App Then. My Heart Longed For The Beautiful Array Of Filter Choices And Interactive Grid. It Felt As Though I Waited In Vain…Until One Day…
While Scrolling Through Insta, I See A Post By VSCO That They Have Finally Release On The Android Platform. As Soon As I Downloaded It, I Was Editing Photos Like A Madman. VSCO Felt Like One Of The Main Reasons I Got Up To Take Photos On A Daily Basis. Just To Have Something To Edit. And The Hashtags! I Could Finally Join The Club Of VSCO Hashtag Users. My Love For The App Grew As More Interactive Grid Features And Filters Were Released. That Soon Came To An End.
Eventually, My Ride Or Die HTC One Was Getting Older By The Day. Its Performance Slowed Down, Space Was Running Low, And Now I Had A Shattered Screen That Didn’t Respond To Touch On The Top Half. What Was I To Do? I Could No Longer Edit Images From My Photoshoots On My Phone. How Would I Be Able To Achieve The Beautiful Tones And Colors That VSCO Provided? During That Downhill Spiral, I Was Given An Old Macbook To Edit On By A Fellow Photographer Who Was Both Fascinated And A Little Concerned That I Was Only Editing My Hi Res Photos On My Phone. The Mac Had Photoshop Installed Already. Was This A Sign Of Having To Let Go Of VSCO And Move Forward With My Life In Photography?
Days Turned To Weeks. Weeks Turned To Months. I Was Practically Enrolled In YouTube Academy With All Of The Photo Editing Videos I Was Absorbing. I Had To Learn How To Achieve The VSCO Look From Scratch. Learning How To Edit My Images From The Ground Up. I Was Ungrateful About The Blessing Of A Mac That I Received. Little Did I Know It Would Help Me Evolve As An Artist.
The Time Finally Came When My Editing Abilities Matched The Feel Of My Go-To VSCO Edits. The Same Edits That I Soon Surpassed When It Came To Having Absolute Control Over Everything That Went Into My Photos. I Hadn’t Used VSCO In So Long As I Was Getting Very Fluent In Photoshop And My Phone Was Pretty Much A Brick That I Couldn’t Edit On. Even When I Got A New Phone, I Barely Used VSCO Anymore. It Was Like Growing Out Of My Favorite Pair Of Kicks. I Had Come So Far…That I Couldn’t Even Lie And Say I Missed Editing On The App.
VSCO Will Forever Get My Love For Teaching Me What It Is I Like And Don’t Like In A Photo Edit. I Owe So Much To The App. It Was A Bitter Farewell, But One That I Quickly Saw The Upside In. If It Wasn’t For The Series Of Events Including Android Supporting The App, My Phone Breaking, And Receiving A Macbook, I Wouldn’t Be Where I Am Today. While I No Longer Use VSCO For My Edits, I Still Use The Hashtags As A Way To Pay Homage To That Beautiful App That Aided My Photography. @vsco You Will Be Missed…-Noah
