Okokok listen
Phillip literally said it was as if the land was trying to hide the magic from him. He has had to find and take everything by force. Now, he SPEAKS FOR the Titan (the land) while actively smothering it. He speaks against the isles’ inherent properties while using them for himself. He doesn’t want anyone else with that power. The colonizer metaphor is so fucking obvious and plain as day instead of hidden behind censors and I am once again in awe of the TOH team.
I’m surprised nobody is talking about this moment.
There were many heart-wrenching moments in Reaching Out, but this scene in particular hurt to watch, and not in a cathartic way.
Luz is tired. Between missing her mom and missing her dad - not to mention the frequent struggles of her loved ones and whatever Emperor Belos is planning - she isn’t allowing herself enough time to process her traumas and the near-constant reopening of her wounds.
The crux of her character arc was founded in her longing for a place that accepted her, warts and all. Now Luz bears the responsibility of choosing between two worlds while saving one of them, and it’s wearing her down.
A common theory circling the fandom is that Season 2 will have Amity be forced to choose between Luz or the Emperor’s Coven. Since Lilith already defected from the Coven, it makes sense that the ones forcing Amity to make that decision will be her parents.
Now, while I’m not particularly against this idea, I am absolutely against it being used as an excuse to stretch out Amity’s pining for Luz. There have been enough shows over the last couple of decades that utilized character angst to extend relationship drama over excruciatingly long periods, usually culminating in last-minute confessions or - even worse - the love interests constantly breaking up and getting back together.
What I want for Season 2 is for Luz and Amity to get together early onandstay together, giving time fortheirnewfound romance to establish itself as the new normal. That last point is especially important since I’m certain most fans will prefer slow-burn and/or angsty romances, so please take a moment to consider these points:
- “Friends and family” can and do include lovers. The found-family themes won’t suffer from Luz having a girlfriend.
- “Luz and her friend, Amity, does [blank]” becomes “Luz and her girlfriend, Amity, does [blank].” Their relationship changes, but the episodic plots and overall narrative doesn’t.
- “Amity learning to confess to Luz” becomes “Amity learning to open up while in a relationship,” which is a much more compelling character arc.
- An established relationship with Luz would mean Amity’s split loyalties and manipulation by her parents will have increased stakes as it affects someone she already has an intimate and vulnerable connection with.
What I’m ultimately getting at is that an established romantic relationship from early on will do more good for Season 2 than otherwise, because allowing romantic relationships to settle in will create opportunities for new dynamics to be formed, new hurdles to overcome, and higher personal stakes for potential drama.
That, and I’d rather not suffer through another “Will They or Won’t They” nightmare all over again.
THIS AGED WELL
IT SURE AS HELL DID
i am so happy with this episode, this show always surpasses my expectations. they show how every relationship faces misunderstandings at one point or another, no one is perfect, but luz and amity talk it through. they communicate and that is how they make it work. they are two 14 year old girls who have issues of their own and are trying to understand their emotions which is always difficult. it almost always causes conflict at one point or another but these two don’t let that ruin their relationship. they support each other through their troubles. yes they have disagreements sometimes, yes they can upset each other but thats normal and they fight their way through it because they love each other.
Love, among many things, is vulnerability. If you can’t give enough of yourself that your partner can hurt you, then it isn’t much of a relationship. Love endures when it overcomes hardship.
