lyra hailing from belacqua / delamare / van der zee / stelmaria etc as water-based names vs lyra herself being constantly likened to fire
lyra as fire in direct rebellion to her water heritage and “i can’t choose my nature but i can choose what i do” and lyra telling her father that she’s not taking his name and snarling “i am nothing like you” at her mother and the way his dark materials is about lyra’s coming of age which is about disentangling yourself from the origins that define your identity and building a version of yourself that belongs only to you, which means that “i hope i’m not like either of my parents” / “you don’t need to be like anyone else they’d be lucky to be anything like you” is one of hdm’s most important theses
