What’s the biblical basis for Mary’s assumption?

there isn’t one. same thing with her being a “perpetual virgin,” the Bible clearly points to the opposite numerous times

The people who wrote the Bible said that she was ever virgin.

When Christ was on the cross he asked John to take care of her, while Joseph was still alive. Which very much implies that they were not living as husband and wife.

1. the people who wrote the Bible were the apostles and various disciples. Not a single one of them ever mentioned her supposed perpetual virginity, in fact they said Joseph “knew” her and listed Jesus’ siblings numerous times.

2. How do you know Joseph was still alive? Does the Bible say that?

3. Why is Mary never mentioned again after the fourth book of the new testament? If she was important you’d think they’d mention her again

4. why does it even matter if she was a virgin in perpetuity or not? what does that have to do with salvation?

1. Those are all older siblings. They are half brothers. Joseph’s children. The Bible doesn’t actually tell us one way or the other, but not everything that the Disciples wrote or said is included in the Bible. A good example of this is how we know who wrote Acts. It never actually says in it that Luke wrote it. The Bible is the foundation, it’s not the entire building. Who was the “disciple whom Jesus loved”? We know it’s John but it doesn’t say that in the Bible.

2 yes. It literally says that Joseph buried Christ.

Joseph of Arimathea is a completely different person.

Can people be saved and go to Heaven with just the Biblical texts? If not, why isn’t it included in Gods Holy Word?

Also all siblings are half siblings because Jesus father is God not Joseph.

What???! They are the same Joseph.

I mean, technically they are step siblings, but that sort of distinction isn’t really a thing until fairly recently.

It doesn’t matter if people can go to heaven with just the Bible or not. I’m simply saying that it not being in the Bible does not mean it isn’t true. There are plenty of people in heaven who didn’t have the Bible available at all. Christianity is older than the Bible. If something actively contradicts the Bible, then it is clearly false.

Also, in general, I am suspicious of ideas that turn up 1400 years after the foundation of Christianity. Before that everyone knew that Mary was ever virgin. If you are writing a book about Jesus Christ, there isn’t much need to talk about His mother.

Thats a lot to unpack, @coyoteobsessed is right that St. Joseph the foster father of Christ and Joseph of Arimathea are completely different people, St. Joseph wasn’t around during Christ’s passion, biblical evidence and tradition suggest that St. Joseph likely died while Jesus was still fairly young, BUT Coyoteobsessed is wrong about the biblical references to “Jesus’s siblings”, the word used in Scripture was a general term for a member of one’s family, and given the cultural context it almost certainly just meant cousin, this is where protestants always seem to get it wrong, they only ever examine these things in the shallowest way and assume their first conclusions to be true regardless of real evidence.

Sure, if you’re not Catholic you don’t HAVE to believe in Mary’s assumption into heaven (I think the Orthodox teach it but don’t profess it as a dogma?) Your salvation may not hinge on it, but why deny it so hard? Why hate the idea so much? The amount a vitriol some protestants have for Christ’s own mother is absolutely flabbergasting, why is it so important to you to deny her perpetual virginity? Why is it so important to you to deny her sinlessness? Why in God’s name do you hate His sweet mother so much????

@catholic-medievalist Perfect sense! The entire conversation was beginning to grate my nerves, thank you for butting in.
