On a sunny morning on December 18th, 1980, Chief engineer Miguel Dengo and seven crew members set sail to document the dam’s sinkhole of man-made Lake Arenal. It was the most ambitious project in Central America at the time. The boat slipped vertically 54 meters down a sinkhole, crushed on the dam floor, and fired like a bullet into a 400-meter long ditch to the other side of the dam. Miraculously, Captain “Gilligan” and director Carlos Sáenz came out alive.
The Retiring Vampire went with @vidaflorestral to @rest.tinajas in Nuevo Arenal and met Arenal’s veteran resident, Fernando Calderón Laguna, father of the television presenter @vivilutheoriginal, to discover Lake Arenal’s untold stories.
