“On 11 August 1916, Alexandra informed Nicholas that their daughters had spent all day posing for a new set of official photographs ‘for giving away to their committees.’ As it turned out these would be the last official pictures ever taken of the four sisters, by photographer Alexander Funk. Released from their usual all-purpose plain skirts and blouses the girls dressed in their best satin tea dresses with embroidered panels of roses, wearing their pearl necklaces and gold bracelets. Anastasia not having passed the socially liberating age of sixteen still had her long hair loose, but her three older sisters all had theirs specially marcel-waved and dressed in chignons, most probably by Alexandra’s hairdresser Delacroix.”

In 1910, Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna of Russia persuaded her younger sister, Maria Nikolaevna to write a letter to their mother asking if Olga be given her own room and be allowed to let down her dresses. Maria tried to persuade her mother it was her idea to write the letter:
11th May, 1910
My dear Mama! Are you well? I want to tell you that Olga would really like to have a room of her own in Peterhof, because she and Tatiana have way too many things and way too little space. Mama how old were you when you got your own room? Please tell me if this can be arranged. Mama, how old were you when you started wearing long dresses? You should not think that Olga also wants to wear long dresses. Mama when you transfer both of us or just Olga, I am thinking it would be convenient to same place where Anastasia had diphtheria. [crossed out] Mama since you wanted Tatiana [end crossed out]

Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna in color! I haven’t colored a b&w photograph in a very long time, maybe more than a year or even two. It’s nice to know my coloring skills are not entirely gone. The original black and white version belongs to Tatiana Z/Flickr.
