imperial-russia:

The four daughters of the last Tsar, though sharing some of the family resemblance, all took after different predecessors when it came to their looks.

  • Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, the eldest of the four, was a perfect mix of her parents.
  • Grand Duchess Tatiana favoured her Hessian relatives, most notably her great-grandmother Empress Maria Alexandrovna and her aunt Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fyodorovna.
  • Grand Duchess Maria bore unmistakable resemblance to her paternal grandparents, Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Fyodorovna.
  • Grand Duchess Anastasia was a less beautiful version of her own mother, resembling in that aspect her aunt Princess Irene of Prussia.

Russian imperial coronations, from Catherine the Great to Nicholas II.

Princess Irina Paley, daughter of Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovich of Russia.

I have long believed that this portrait by K.F. Sohn, identified by the Hermitage Museum as Grand Duchess Maria Mikhailovna of Russia, is in fact Maria’s younger sister, Grand Duchess Elizaveta Mikhailovna, Duchess of Nassau, but seeing it displayed so prominently in a palace belonging to the grand ducal family of Luxembourg (who are descendants of Elizaveta’s widower, Adolphe, Duke of Nassau) has convinced me that my hunch was correct. What do you all think?
