dutch-born exotic dancer margaretha macleod née zelle (stage name “mata hari”) .
in february of 1917, the dancer was arrested in paris; charged with being a german spy. by july, she was convicted of the crime and sentenced to execution. on october 15th of the same year, on the eastern side of paris, margaretha macleod was put to death by firing squad . she was, at the time, 41 years old .
