Sub-Mariner #52 (Friedrich/Everett, Aug 1972). Bill Everett’s art evokes Namor’s WW2 era, and the return of his old flame Betty underscores this nostalgia. But recent X-Men foe Sunfire brings about a truly disastrous ending, the likes of which I doubt would’ve been permitted in the ‘40s.

Marvel Feature #6 (Friedrich/Trimpe, Nov 1972). Jan gets on Hank’s level to sort through some marital discord. But Whirlwind — who has been in disguise as Jan’s chauffeur (for years!) — burns down their lab. Now the two teeny Avengers are missing presumed dead.

Marvel Feature #5 (Friedrich/Trimpe, Sept 1972). Still stuck in his shrunken size, Pym stumbled across an old foe’s latest scheme. Egghead’s niece stitches Hank a teeny new outfit to replace his soda-stained super-suit.

Marvel Feature #4 (Friedrich/Trimpe, July 1972). Hank Pym is dragged out of retirement when a French gangster kidnaps the son of Curt Connors. He and Peter Parker are able to save the kid, but after getting infected with a rabies variant, Pym is apparently stuck ant-sized! Also Hank now has a dog named Orkie who can drive cars. This is gonna be a real goofy book.

Astonishing Tales #15 (Friedrich/Kane, Dec 1972). Bobbi brings Ka-Zar back to the concrete jungle, where drug pushers are just as dangerous as the Savage Land’s beasts… and even more cunning!

Power of Warlock #3 (Friedrich/Kane, Dec 1972). Marvel’s most fascinating exploration of power so far! Having abused his nigh-omnipotence in anger, Warlock tries to temper himself. But does that mean cooperating with the military industrial complex?

Invincible Iron Man #53 (Friedrich/Tuska & Starlin, Dec 1972). I figured this ethereal Black Lama character must turn out to be someone important. So I looked him up… and nothing can prepare you for what is about to happen.

Invincible Iron Man #52 (Friedrich/Tuska, Nov 1972). After splitting with Marianne, Tony relocates to LA and fights wildfires sparked by a local cultist.

Sub-Mariner #56 (Friedrich/Adkins, Dec 1972). Years after renouncing his throne, Namor is lured back to defend Atlantis. He upholds his honor but his refusal to re-enter the city ends in tragedy.
