Sub-Mariner #52 (Friedrich/Everett, Aug 1972). Bill Everett’s art evokes Namor’s WW2 era, and the return of his old flame Betty underscores this nostalgia. But recent X-Men foe Sunfire brings about a truly disastrous ending, the likes of which I doubt would’ve been permitted in the ‘40s.

Defenders #1 (Englehart/Buscema, Aug 1972). Hulk keeps cool long enough to ask Dr Strange for help rescuing Namor from a necromancer. This team doesn’t make any sense but I’m kinda into that dynamic.

Defenders #3 (Englehart/Buscema, Dec 1972). The Silver Surfer’s been trapped on Earth for years now, but Doctor Strange thinks a quick detour through the Multiverse can free him. It’s a disastrous, maddening mission. Englehart brings some psychedelic storytelling, but Sal Buscema’s art is way too straightforward for such a trippy tale.

Defenders #2 (Englehart/Buscema, Oct 1972). Strange, Namor, and Hulk embark on an expedition to find the Silver Surfer.

Sub-Mariner #56 (Friedrich/Adkins, Dec 1972). Years after renouncing his throne, Namor is lured back to defend Atlantis. He upholds his honor but his refusal to re-enter the city ends in tragedy.

Sub-Mariner #55 (Everett, Nov 1972). Namorita gives her cousin a magic buccaneer’s earring, and Namor wears it when he battles an abominable “snow-king.”

Sub-Mariner #54 (Everett, Oct 1972). The throwback feel of this book is surreal, when compared to the horror or crime titles it shares rack space with.

Sub-Mariner #53 (Everett, Sept 1972). Sunfire and Namor team up to defeat the nationalist Dragon-Lord.

Marvel Universe: Namor

I’m surprised this figure hasn’t been labeled as the poster child for why the Marvel Universe line is so frowned upon. Even for my low standards, this figure is hideous. Nothing about it is pleasing and quite honestly, why would you pay $10.99 for it? The figure has a nasty disposition and being that this is one of the earlier releases, the articulation suffers from the poor body mold. The new costume doesn’t look good at all. It looks very generic and it’s not something that a king of the sea would wear and lastly, face sculpt is terrible. My only saving grace is that I didn’t pay for this but like I said, I have low standards when it comes to action figures but even I would never recommend something this awful.

Like you don’t understand how freaking much I love the Steve and Namor friendship. Ok I’m gonna tell you. During the time when they met Steve was a brandspanking new super solider, he was in the war and Namor had been conviced to join and they (as all the invaders) became a family.

Before this Steve was alone. His mother had died and he had no one. Like imagine how he felt? Alone in a city who at the time hated people like him. They thought he would have been better off if he had died as a child. (talking about the eugenics of the 1920s)

Namor had family but they weren’t what you would call close. His mother kept him at an arms length always trying to prepare him for taking the throne. His grandfather was an abusive asshole. They kept telling Namor how bad the surface men were.

So when they met up Namor had already hated the human race. He was distrustful of people espically men who were in power. He never knew Steve as Skinny Steve and judged him only on his character since he didn’t care that Steve was a super soldier. Steve had this hot head arrogant asshole of a Prince to deal with.

Namor didn’t accept Steve for being a good fighter. He accepted him for being a good man. Something he hadn’t seen much of as a child. Steve and Jim showed Namor that good men exist right alongside of bad ones.

Namor was hated for being born as much as or probably more than the people who looked down on Steve. They found a kinship, a brotherhood in one another.

So it was Steve’s character that stood out. In Namor, Steve found a brother. All the Invaders were a family who always saved each other and NEVER left a man behind. So Steve went from being alone to having a family that loved and trusted him and didn’t think he wasn’t supposed to be there or ever said that it was the serum that made Steve great. They knew he was great without it.
