Headcanon: Phoenix doesn’t really do social media or anything that would particularly expose him to current memes, but he does talk to Edgeworth a lot. And Edgeworth also isn’t large on social media, but he occasionally takes a look at the Steel Samurai fandom and frequently discusses it with Maya. Maya has an AO3 account, a fanfiction.net account, two tumblrs, and a discord, she is up to date on the majority of the memes and terminology and she will use them on Edgeworth, because she likes to see him react to them.

As a result of all this, Edgeworth knows more memes and internet terminology than anyone would suspect, and he passes it on to Phoenix specifically so that Phoenix can use it to mess with Athena and Apollo by getting it wrong on purpose. “Aw, look, a puppo!” “This songs really slams!” “That’s not very galaxy brain of you, Apollo.”

Athena and Apollo both vaguely suspect he’s messing with them, but they’re not sure how he’s messing with them, and it still drains their will to live just a little bit every time he mangles something. Phoenix waits bemusedly for the day they remember he’s a millennial and that, while he’s not great with them, he did grow up with computers. Also, as a young artistic kid in the aughts he absolutely had a deviantart account, where he used to be quite fond of the “Grab my ________ - ADVENTURE!” meme.

This scenario also means that Edgeworth knows what his younger employees in the Prosecutors’ Office are talking about when they make meme references, and, even more importantly, they do not know he knows. Like, sure, if you think about it, they can sort of picture a universe where he’s a Steel Samurai fan (he’s friends with Phoenix, after all, he’s obviously quirkier than they gave him credit for), but no one can picture this man memeing. He just Does Not Have That Energy, and he certainly doesn’t give off the vibes of being the chaos demon behind Phoenix’s misquoting reign of terror.

And I’m just… picturing the younger prosecutors making references to each other, as a sort of in-joke thing and also for the thrill of sliding these jokes past the boss ‘without him noticing.’ Except one day someone crosses a line too many with Edgeworth in the room and he turns, makes direct eye contact with them, and goes “Hashtag rude, that’s very small brain of you.”

And just, like, “…how long have you known what we were talking about?”

Edgeworth glare, full power, “The entire time.”

Then he stands up, dabs, and leaves the room as the young prosecutors lose their minds and also ten years of life each as they recall some of the things they’ve said in front of him. None of the rest of the office believe them when they try and explain their trauma.

Apollo doesn’t find out the source of Phoenix’s meming before going to Khura’in. He finds out because Athena phones him in deep distress, because he is the only one who will understand. She herself finds out because she overhears a conversation between Phoenix and Maya wherein Phoenix correctly uses a meme that she’s heard him mangle countless times and bursts into the conversation like, “What? WHAT??? HOW LONG HAVE YOU KNOWN HOW TO DO THIS-??!??!?”

And Phoenix just deadeyes her like, “Athena, I grew up with computers and I’m friends with Maya and Edgeworth, of course I know how to meme.”

“What do you mean Edgeworth?!?”

“Edgeworth’s friends with Maya and Kay Faraday, of course he knows how to meme. He texted me ‘There are advantages to being a marine biologist’ after that trial with the orca, he knows his stuff.”

And the only option after that is to wake Apollo up at two in the morning, because Athena is suffering and she needs someone who will share her pain.
