I’ve kind of been stuck all day on this bit of narrative that’s been warming my heart because of the Marichael home motif. Louise refers to her daughters as stars on the ground. She gets it inscribed in Navajo on the pendant she gives Patricia right before she gives her up to be adopted. From Patricia, to Mimi, to Maria the pendant has been passed down from daughter to daughter, unknowingly carrying on the tradition of being a star on the ground.
Michael spent his childhood looking up at the stars dreaming of the family he was separated from and hoping they’d come save him. Little did he know the granddaughter of the baby his mother had helped save was right there in the same town as him. A piece of his mother’s legacy has been sharing a parallel track of existence with him for most of his life on Earth.
Maria, a star on the ground, a piece of the very family Michael has been yearning for his whole Earthbound life has been right in front of him this whole time. She’s been giving him a hard time, making him smile, making him laugh, and he’s been falling in love with her. I think that’s incredibly special and adds a new layer to their relationship and the connection they have.
